Lynchburg Mayor Stephanie Reed, who has held office since January 2023, has called out critics during city council meetings and allegedly contacted employers of others who have been critical of her on social media. Reed is also up for reelection by the city council in January.
At an explosive city council meeting last month, Reed called for the press to be shut out and for officers to ensure everyone left the city council chambers.
On July 3, after a special city council meeting adjourned over a lack of quorum, the two city council members who called the meeting began holding a press conference. However, Reed quickly attempted to shut it down.
“[O]fficer to escort everyone outside of the chamber,” Reed said. “The chamber is closed, the meeting is over. It has been adjourned, there was no request for a press conference. It can be done outside of the chamber.”
“Press – turn the press off. Out, now,” she added.

Sounds like she's not handling leadership well.
And this from JustTheNews.com, hardly a Left-leaning news outlet.
Typically I trust Just the News with just about any story, but they’re approaching this one from the wrong direction. I’m just outside of Lynchburg, and know all of the players well.
The press conference in question was called by Helgeson and Misjuns — two “agents of chaos,” so to speak — without going through the proper council channels. Especially Misjuns — he’s not to be trusted, in any way, shape or form. And why Helgeson has hitched his wagon to Misjun’s falling star is beyond me. (Though I can also relay a juicy, first-hand personal story about Helgeson.)
Turns out, the reason for the impromptu news conference — a lawsuit over “voting irregularities” in the primary — has been dropped. I’ve yet to see Helgeson or Misjuns run to the microphone to admit they were wrong and out of line.
How “Republican” is she?
Women have no place in leadership roles with rare exceptions like Margaret Thatcher. They were meant to be helpers to men. Sorry but this 63 yr old female that has seen the devastation women’s lib has brought won’t feel differently.
>>Sounds like she’s not handling leadership well.
Or, perhaps, she’s just treating the press like the enemy that they are.
Reed said. “The chamber is closed, the meeting is over. It has been adjourned, there was no request for a press conference. It can be done outside of the chamber.”
.............................................
The press wasn’t muzzled. They were just moved outside the chamber. I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Stephanie Reed isn’t the one out of line on this issue. We know her, personally. We feed the veterans on the last Friday of every month (they rally downtown every Friday), and she often comes down with her veteran husband.
Misjuns and Helgeson are the ones out of line here. Misjuns currently has a lawsuit against they city — he was fired for being the arsehat that he is — and Helgeson is still butt-hurt over not becoming mayor. They are both agents of chaos, out to burn it all down.
Looks like Misjuns has run to Just the News, just before he and Helgeson are about to be censured by the council for breaking council rules (the impromptu meeting and press conference in question).
So “Just the News” just runs with the leftist spin, editorializing instead of reporting. I’m not familiar with this source, but if it is supposed to be centrist or right-leaning then this article is disgraceful. Will maintain my unfamiliarity with this “news” source.
No, Just the News is a trustworthy site. I have a feeling they were contacted by Misjuns himself — that dude’s nothing but trouble — and ran with his story.
He and Helgeson will possibly be censured by the council tomorrow for their actions, and this would be Misjuns second.
Thanks for the info. You never what you’ll get from the “news” these days. The Left are ever the victims, and it’s “always” the Republicans fault...
Even I can see this “article” is heavily slanted against the mayor. Long-winded, too...
AMEN!! And I am also a woman!!
She’s “powerful”, “fierce”, “brave”, “independent”, “steadfast”.. oh, she’s a Republican? Then she’s fascist.
Not guilty. After the makeup is washed off.
Seriously, the headline is at best misleading it appears to be very inaccurate.
There may very well be something in the city bylaws that prohibits council members holding press conferences in that room without a quorum and a meeting. In any case all they had to do is step outside the door and talk with the press as long as they liked.
Requiring that a press conference be moved to outside the building when a meeting is over is hardly quashing free speech.
Yep, you pretty much nailed it. The Republican party in Lynchburg has been a mess since Misjuns joined the Council, and Veronica Bratton became the chair of the Lynchburg City Republican Committee.
Misjuns has been censured before, and hopefully again tomorrow. He has this creepy, stalking obessession with some of the Republican members of the Council. He even sent a Liberty University student to another Republican’s town hall to spy and ask uncomfortable questions. All documented.
You’d think he’d work this hard against the Democrats, but he has a tendency to go after the other Republicans.
For any reading who have never been there, it is a leafy, hilly town with the James River running through it. There is a charming waterfront restaurant, business and hotel area, a stock of lovely old houses in the historic center of town, and newer suburbs and malls to the south and west. Liberty University is one of the largest businesses there. Down the road not far is Thomas Jefferson's retreat house, Poplar Forest—so charming and historic.
