Since the early days of the English language. That has been a quite acceptable use of the plural “they” for a long, long time.

I worked 30 years as a tech editor. I am so glad I retired before this “they” nonsense got serious. It had already started before I retired.

They might have been used because the sex of the pilot was unknown. I think that usage goes back aways.
