Fear the beaver: How a gas station became a cult (and why you should consider joining)

Three things I like about Buc’ees: They have french burnt peanuts, no semis and their gas prices are noticeably cheaper.

However, their food is really expensive. Yeah, they have tons of selection, but the prices are prohibitive. I do a lot of long distance drives, and I think they play on the “Vegas” psycology. That is, when in Vegas, money is not really “money”. You blow it without really thinking about it. I think people are that way on road trips, at least to some degree.

In my case, it’s not just the price. It’s the calories.

But their gas is cheaper than Love’s, Pilot, et al.

FWIW, I like the coffee and coffee condiments at Loves and Pilot better too.

I gotta admit their bathrooms are really nice, but I’ve found the ones at Loves and Pilot are “nice enough”. But the first time I experienced their bathrooms I was blown away.

But after stopping by the Buc-ees on 95 and 75 I have to say the thing that brings me back is their gas prices. I’ve not been on that trip for over a year now. If there gas prices have gone up to match the other stations, I’ll stick with Love’s and Pilot, because I like their coffee better.

They do have a future rival called Wally’s that is in the Midwest.

Wally’s is great. While they are very similar my wife likes Wally’s has a different choice of food. It’s as big as a Buccees. And it has a similar experience. But there are only two of them. Both near St. Louis

Buccees is a truck stop for cars. Can sometimes be busy, good BBQ on the road! Convenient to fill up especially if trailering.

Buc-ee’s is fine for a visit or two. Been there, done that. Now, would I love them to stock my salsa brand? Absolutely. I think their private label stuff makes that near impossible.

It would be a preferred place to go if one was around, apparently.

I am visiting TN, and had my Buc-ees virginity taken in Sevierville yesterday.

They had huge and clean bathrooms, I'll give them that.

But beyond the bathroom? It was a zoo: not just super-busy, hyper busy. So full of people running around in every direction that it was disorienting. The chopped brisket sandwich I bought gave me an upset stomach an hour later.

I and my traveling companions agreed - no more Buc-ees for us. Other than for using the bathroom.

I think it’s easy to explain. Just think of it as a 60,000 square foot convenience store that sells the best brisket in town, along with sporting goods, clothing, and jewellery. 😎

I hope you also had time to visit "Smoky Mountain Knife Works" (SMKW), while you were in Sevierville. SMKW is a great place to spend your money. After all, you're going to need a sharp knife to cut into all of those bags of goodies you bought at Buc-ee's.

LOL! I’m not actually from Ocala myself, just Belleview which is south of Ocala and north of (gag) the Villages. I’ve only been in our Wawa once and wasn’t totally impressed. I get gas there occasionally. As far as Buc-ee’s, we’re still waiting; I may very well be dead and gone by the time it gets here! 😮

Thanks, I'll stop by the next time I drive east from Nashville!

Wawa’s has great coffee. It also carries other Philadelphia products you can’t always get elsewhere, like Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews, soft pretzels, and Tastykakes.

“South of the border”! I remember traveling through North/South Carolina and it seemed like every other billboard was an ad for them.

Gas price is good. We were going to go 3 miles off the highway in Springfield MO to get cheaper gas. But Bucee’s was the same low price right off the interstate.

We live within 12 miles of a Buc-ees. We go occasionally just to browse the overpriced gift items and to get fudge and jerky. It’s so crowded on holiday driving days there’s a line out to the interstate - gotta go at off times.
