Conscription — a practice most Americans believe should be relegated to the dustbin of history — has returned as an uncomfortable topic of conversation among U.S. allies and adversaries alike. This has generated concern and even conspiracy theories among American voters. But a candid discussion would be healthier. The fact is, if the United States hopes to deter or defeat a Chinese attack on Taiwan, it should be prepared to effectively implement a draft. To be clear, this is a solution of last resort, but one that may be necessary.

Right now, U.S. mobilization has not been tested in decades. As a result, current ideas about how it would function are woefully out of date. Being prepared to execute a draft requires buy-in from across all branches of government — and society writ large.

At a minimum, the executive branch and Congress should actively pursue a more proactive approach. The National Security Council should take the lead on mobilization exercises. Congress should also get out ahead on expanding Selective Service System registration to all Americans between the ages of 18–25, thereby preventing future legal challenges to the current all-male registration system when time may be of the essence.

I volunteered a few years after the draft ended. I can see the value of a draft when we look at today's youth but I also know it is politically charged topic. My first problem is the people making the decision did not serve, nor are/have their children served.

This is the same as when Congress pushed the states to raising the drinking age. That was done by people way past 18-20 years old, so they had no consequences from the action.

If there were a draft under a Biden/Harris admin rest assured only American citizens will be drafted and this will be one process you will need to bring multiple forms of IDs including your birth certificate.

Illegals will be home working and making lots of money with their tip based jobs such as UBER, Grubhub and grocery / retail same day deliveries while we are drafted to process more illegals at the southern border.

There is less hunger now than when the world had 3 billion people. Julian Simon's bet with Paul Ehrlich showed who was the better visionary about scarcity of resources. With all that "extra" CO2 in the air the Sahara is starting to green up.

The term "breeding like rabbits" is obnoxious. Humans procreate. We do not "breed". I was the fifth of five. Several of the churches I go to have numerous families with 8-12 children. The status symbol is the 15 passenger van. They loving raise their children, some of whom will contribute to solving the problems you are concerned about. The amount of resources and how they are used is not a fixed pie. Nuclear energy alone could deal with much of the need for electricity (especially when combined with SMRs [Small Nuclear Reactors]). Even if they don't solve the problems of world hunger etc., they are human beings and not to be thought of as surplus. Malthus and Ricardo were evil, and so are the neo-Malthusians like Paul Ehrlich.

Julian Simon calculated the earth could support 30 billion. We're fine, its just godless leftists that are the problem.

I would like to know what term of service the authors have in mind. I didn’t see it in the article. The last time I remember a politician suggesting a draft was a few years ago. A democrat by the way. I don’t remember who it was. I think he wanted two years. I think this would be a total waste. Even a basic infantryman in the modern US military needs far more technical knowledge and training than required in WW2, Korea, or Vietnam. A two year draft would have most soldiers leaving shortly after they were actually qualified. It would have to be at least four years or, if in actual wartime, you’re in until the end.
