I read once that if you took the top 100 athletes of both sexes and had them compete in any sport the top 2 women would beat the bottom 2 men.

I don’t believe that. The right side of the athletic bell curve has a much longer “tail” for men than for women.

Number 1 and number 2 women would beat Number 99 and Number 100 ranked men?

Serena and Venus Williams claimed they could beat any man outside the top 200 but couldn't beat the 203rd ranked male tennis player Karsten Braasch (who was ranked down to 350 a week later). He even beat them back-to-back without a break in between. His training regime involved a pack of cigarettes, a couple of bottles of beer, and he played a round of golf prior to the match. He said he played like someone ranked 600 to keep the game "fun". The Williams sisters adjusted their claim that they could beat a man ranked outside the top 350.
