When Jefferson, John Adams, and Ben Franklin confronted the crisis, Franklin, argued that America’s trade in the Mediterranean was relatively insignificant, so American merchant vessels should avoid that sea.

Adams believed America should follow the European practice of paying “protection” money.

Jefferson knew it was common for the “Mussulmen” to take tribute for a certain period but suddenly requiring 'fresh negotiations' and a higher price.

What Muslims did to the American economy in 2001, their forebears mass hijacking did to the American economy in 1793.

Jefferson did the right thing but I think he should have leveled those ports and threaten to return if anything happened again. Dresden and Hiroshima/Nagasaki are good (later)examples. The Pirates went back to their old ways when the US got distracted in the war of 1812.

Brian Kilmeade wrote a good book on the subject. The 2 warring nations docked at neutral Gibralter where the Brits let us fight what was their war also. Hang out together in port and fight on the sea.

I’m guessing this man’s someone wants us to invade Iran and Yemen to safeguard Sunni Islam from Shia? Because that’s our interest… or something.

The U.S. didn’t have the military capability to deal with piracy on the high seas back in the 1790s. We barely had a navy at the time. One of the negative consequences of the American Revolution was that Britain stopped serving as protection for our vessels along these major trade routes.
