In the UK if you respond to an attack with what the government deems, "Inappropriate amount of force" you are the one who will go to prison.
You are not even allowed to plant bushes with long thorns to protect your property because the burglar might hurt himself. And that is not something new. It has been the rule for some 40 years.
Something went badly wrong after WWII and they never have managed to fix it.
