With plans for athletes to swim the Seine River through the heart of Paris, Olympic organizers essentially bet against climate change’s extreme weather. For several days it appeared they would lose — by ditching the swimming portion of triathlon races.
It wasn’t until early Wednesday, after the men’s race had been postponed a day and test events called off, that organizers announced the most recent tests showed the water met standards to allow swimming.
Some scientists and engineers said organizers were taking a huge gamble at a time when heavy rains have increased with human-caused climate change, especially in Europe. The rains run off from the urban environment and contribute to higher bacteria levels in the city’s famed river.
Organizers “had worked through most of the scenarios related to computer hacking and physical threats without fully assessing the implications of extreme events associated with climate,” said University of Arizona climate scientist Kathy Jacobs. “It’s definitely time to take climate threats seriously.”
If any city could be expected to be mindful of the challenges of climate change, it’s Paris. It’s where the most significant climate agreement in history was struck almost a decade ago — to try to limit Earth’s warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Paris, like many older cities around the world, has a combined sewer system, which means that the city’s wastewater and stormwater flow through the same pipes. With heavy or prolonged periods of rain, the pipes’ capacity is reached, sending raw wastewater into the river instead of a treatment plant.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
The surfing competition is being held in Tahiti which is about as far away from Paris as one can get. Having the triathlon swimming portion be in the Seine is beyond stupid. It’s not as if France is landlocked or anything.
I think Deep States, plural, are really getting off on the prospect of watching elite athletes swim in ****.
The athletes knuckled under for this, too...
They get no sympathy from me.
Proponents of climate change and the Seine River have something in common; they are both filled with ...
Stupid is as stupid does
The country has the Atlantic ocean on one side and the Mediterranean sea on the other side, do the swimming in one of those.
Enjoy your swim, competitors!
Yes, he would make Goebbels proud.
Yeah they’re blinded by the allure of Olympic medals. I looked up where London in 2012 held their triathlon since London is somewhat similar to Paris having a river flow through it. It was in Hyde Park and there is a small lake called the Serpentine in it. The swimming portion was held there and it was just under a mile of swimming and it says they did one lap of the lake so back and forth across it I assume.
Because waiting one day made the water SO MUCH SAFER! (Not!)

The perfect symbol for these games apparently
So let me get this straight - Paris can't/won't spend the money necessary to keep wastewater from the river, and blames that on "climate change"?

No, no, it’s climate change that makes it rain, just as climate change causes droughts.
A CANADIAN swimmer finished his swim & promptly PUKED 10 times.
