Fascinating and horrifying secrets of El Salvador mega-prison for gangs credited with slashing murders by 70%
Daily Mail UK ^ | July 29, 2024 | Laura Parnaby

Dramatic footage has emerged from inside El Salvador's mega-prison for gang members showing its concrete confinement cell and impenetrable security.

The Centre for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT) in Tecoluca is home to 40,000 of the world's most dangerous men who will never be released - each one with at least one homicide conviction.

And now YouTuber Nick Shirley has offered one of the most in-depth looks at the prison's interior yet.

He also takes a tour of the solitary confinement chamber, a narrow cell comprising only a raised concrete platform used as a bed alongside a rudimentary toilet basin.

There is no mattress on the bed and anyone finding themselves in a solitary is not given any sheets to slip on.

A sink is filled with cold water for inmates to wash on - and natural light comes from a small round hole drilled into the thick concrete ceiling.

Shirley also offered the first glance at steps prison workers have taken to tamp down any riots. An enormous room filled with scores of assault rifles sits within the prison, waiting to be deployed in the event of any future unrest.

Footage from the inside shows topless and heavily tattooed inmates lined up under the watchful eye of heavily-armed guards at the institution which has been a key part of a concerted effort to drive down El Salvador's murder rate.

The number of homicides in the Central America nation dropped 70 percent last year as authorities under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele cracked down on criminals both inside and outside the jail.

It’s like saying... I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, but analyzing the animal savagery of these monsters, we have to say that they deserve it.

“Do you think any of them have a moment of clarity, look at their tatoos and think I wish I could go back to being a kid again.”

Absolutely. Where I work, a tattoo is a NON-STARTER and our management is under orders to dispense with anyone with a tattoo looking for work (and also to remove those already employed, but that’s tougher, and less formal).

WE need 10-15 of those prisons... no, I’d rather see all of them executed immediately upon capture & conviction, no appeals.

Why are they in those crowded rooms wearing shorts? I’d make them take them off. Let them really enjoy each other.

We should pay to build more of them.

“We should pay to build more of them.”

Not us. Elsalvador figured out the formula. Spend $1 on prisons for felons, and economic output of the country increases by at least $10. They know the formula. It’s best that we stay out of the way, give our record of trying to ‘fix things’.

“This is a dangerous army in waiting. They need to be executed.”

No kidding. Amassing them in one super prison for life is just nuts and is a disaster just waiting to happen. The should be executed.

President Nayib Bukele said the first step that they took in the war against gangs was , “we prayed “ .

Corcoran State prison has the same kind of prisoners-incorrigible. I’d find out how much cheaper it is in El Salvador and contract it out to them.

In Papillion France ‘was through’ with those sent there. They settled in Fr. Guyana-those that served their terms. The word is banishment.

” Send all the people from El Salvador back as there is no longer a need for asylum.”

They’re doing it themselves. El Salvador’s population is growing rapidly, partially from expat relocation and partially from Salvadoran citizens returning.

Amazing what happens to a country that embraces law and order, and also when the US stops meddling in their politics...

I support this prison idea.

We need more of this, world-wide.

”Amassing them in one super prison for life is just nuts and is a disaster just waiting to happen. The should be executed.”

I disagree. I think it’s a good plan. Think of the impact of the rest of the population, especially the young kids, seeing what happens to you when you become a criminal gang member. I imagine it’s a great deterrent, and will hopefully save the lives of the next generation. Our prisons are not a deterrent.

“To be emptied out soon into your neighborhood...”

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Actually, I was thinking every country already had shipped their worst to us. Maybe we should “bomb the s#!t” (to quote Trump) out of that facility before the creatures show up on our doorsteps.

”I assure you...execution is a substantial deterrent.

How would execution be a deterrent in the USA when only 27 states allow it?

Also I like the fact that this prison gives the inmates a chance to hear the Gospel and thus perhaps of saving their soul.

“I like the fact that this prison gives the inmates a chance to hear the Gospel and thus perhaps of saving their soul.”

I think many/most prisons here give inmates that option, too. Most churches we’ve been involved with support and/or staff prison ministries.
