They haven’t declared it because they don’t want to recognize Israel’s borders or right to independence, and they are a basket case of a territory. They have two entirely separate governments on two separate land masses. Gaza is those by Islamists and the West Bank by Arabists in fancy Italian suits. They don’t get along - two different ideologies. Corrupt as all get out and almost entirely dependent on others for nearly all essential needs.

And their dependency attitude continues - demanding others recognize their independence when they can’t and don’t recognize it themselves. Nobody even knows who’s in charge and neither land mass had held elections in nearly 2 decades. Abbas is almost 89 years old and the Hamas leadership in Gaza is either dead or in hiding.

The Olympic ideal, going all the way back to antiquity and it’s origins, was and should continue to be that for a brief period of Time there should be no politics and no hatred, just the pursuit of excellence in athletics and the enjoyment of watching the worlds best athletes perform. There is plenty of time to go back to existing animosities.

What I find ironic is that the Palestinians, many of whom have a significant amount of Greek ancestry, pay no attention to this whatsoever. To them, every minute of the day and every event is political in nature, all in service of their murderous prophet.
