The battle of 'Cedar Creek' is coming. It could have changed the outcome of the war.

Sheridan took a trip to DC (away from the front) to discuss plans with Lincoln; thinking his troops were secure and the rebels were too disorganized to attack.

Early was determined to strike Sheridan’s army in their camps along the east bank of Cedar Creek. Early executed a surprise attack early on October 19, after his troops marched single file all night, then crossed the creek at daybreak and drove three Union corps from the field...
