A mega earthquake could rock America's heartland - home to at least 11 million Americans - in the next 50 years.

Scientists say a little-known 150-mile-long stretch through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois, has the conditions to generate a 6.0-plus magnitude quake.

The National Guard this week in St Louis conducted earthquake preparation drills that simulated a focused response to an 8.4 magnitude earthquake

I grew up in that red zone. Everyone who lives there is well aware of the New Madrid fault.

I can recall a quake that audibly rumbled & shook the dinner table hard enough that the iced tea sloshed out of the pitcher. I went to the front door & my dad went to the back door looking for the tornado.

On Christmas Eve in 1982 I remember another quake that cracked pipes all over town.

The ‘89 SF earthquake was 6.9.

How many of the National Guard who ran the drill will be alive to prove their skills in 50 years?

“In Western Kentucky there is an area called The Land Between the Lakes. There are two Lakes formed by dams that create a long strip of land for Recreation on the Lakes.”

I like it when people describe geographic layouts clearly and concisely.

My buddy used to work for the UofMO ag research station in SE MO. When the state decided to have earthquake prep, he got designated as the station’s earthquake coordinator. He discovered that all their earthquake supplies were stored in a brick-wall building, one that would easily come down in a big shake.

His bosses said, “Oh, well.”
