Dreams are absurd and unpredictable. However, while we each have our unique dream experiences, there’s a lot of commonality in what we dream about. Many of us share the same feelings of desire, nostalgia, and stress that are often the root cause of so many dreams — but why do we often get the same dream repeatedly? Here are the most common recurring dreams and what they might mean.

More than 50% of people experience these unpleasant dreams. Being chased in a dream may mean you’re avoiding something important in real life, or that you’re refusing to accept something you disagree with. If you’re the one doing the chasing, it may mean you feel like you’re falling behind in life and need to catch up.
Being transported back to school just in time for an exam you’re unprepared for is a common recurring dream. This situation usually represents real-life deadlines, which manifest as exams in the dream world. If you feel anxious about a work project or an upcoming major life event, that sense of unpreparedness can creep into your dreams.
Falling is one of the most common recurring dreams. It often indicates a deep sensation of helplessness. If you feel powerless at your job or like you’re losing control of your personal life, you’re more likely to experience a dream where you’re falling. If the falling is accidental — such as tripping off a cliff — then that may relate to a lack of stability and security.
After I retired as an RN, for at least 5 years, I would frequently dream that I had completely forgotten about a patient for the entire shift, not assessing them or giving them their medication. Huge amount of anxiety. I recently changed my allergy meds, from claritin to zyrtec, and now have crazy dreams in the early mornings. I can never remember them once I wake, but while I’m dreaming, they are very wicked.
Worked hourly for a mfg. company many years ago, and keep having a dream of at the end of my shift realizing I forgot to clock-in (time-card), and as I wake up I believe I didn't get paid for years while working there.
Same company, Christmas party and everyone is partying while I run my machine...minutes before everyone is about to go home my machine malfunctions and as everyone leaves I'm trying to hurry and fix the problem but cannot find the solution, the building empties and the lights go out...I wake up.
...then there's the dream with me and a young Suzanne Pleshette...wish that one would reoccur.
Spending too much of my life going to college at night after a day of work....
Still have bad dreams about that, the stress and being ill prepared.
“and that I can wake up and stop the bad that’s around me. It works.”
Sometimes
Wow.
I have recurring dreams of traveling somewhere or trying to travel somewhere and encountering problems. I can’t get to the airport, or I get there and don’t know what happened to my luggage (before boarding the flight). In one dream I flew home and realized I had never checked out of the hotel and my luggage was back there. Other dreams involve traveling by rail or auto, often with difficulties.
Forget the dreams we’re living in a real life nightmare!!
My car one is being in the backseat, laughing away, then realizing no one is driving the car.
I have recurring school-related dreams of either:
1) not remembering my locker combination
2) not remembering which class I’m supposed to go to
3) not having done all my homework
In my dreams I've been buried alive, trapped in small spaces, mashed in plane crashes, shot...
Reality today is more scary.
I’m always getting robbed!
Sometimes I can go back to sleep and get out of the situation, but usually not.
Twice now, I’ve dreamt I’m standing in front of a urinal. That’s stopped, but being “on guard” keeps me from deep (REM) sleep.
When I was wearing nicotine patch, it was like an adventure every night.
I can only say that if you ever have a nightmare so dreadful that you’re afraid to fall asleep, don’t keep it to yourself. I had one like that and finally told my mom which released me from the terror by God’s grace. It’s the only one I ever had that was that scary.
There was an extremely relieving side to the dream. It involved evil and when I called on the name of Jesus to get rid of the evil, it worked, even in my sleep! I was so happy about that; I just didn’t want the first part to recur, so that’s what made me cowardly.
I’m glad I nearly always take too long to awaken for me to remember the dreams which are mostly nightmares. Good dreams of my wife being alive again help me cope.
Recent nightmare was I was going to be buried in the dirt without a coffin and I was going around trying to convince people that was improper and they should get a coffin for me.
Once I had a nightmare of being at a party in my childhood home’s back yard. I saw a big passenger jet really low and I knew it was in trouble. I tried to get people to help. They said “You don’t know anything. Pilots know better than you. Maybe they can land it here in the yard.” “No, that plane is going to crash. Somebody do something.”
The afternoon edition of the printed newspaper said the first jumbo jet crash had happened and the passengers and crew had died that morning.
RE: reality more scary....
Yes. I have nightmares of woke Democrat voters taking over the US in a Chinese Communist style tyranny with no freedom of speech, lost gun rights, suppression of religious worship, frantic climate change restrictions and the building of forced labor prison camps for conservatives.
But I am awake for them.
I wish my dreams were as simple as falling or somebody chasing me.
okay lurking profilers... it is only the wonders & complications of the erstwhile female persona that steals away the otherwise void of unconsciousness.
Can’t sleep with them. Can’t sleep without them... lol
Definitely the school dream involving a class I never attended, and I didn’t even know where it met.
Another is running on empty, probably an artifact of getting stranded because of a stuck gas gauge many years ago. That’s one reason I will never own an EV unless forced.
I’m often naked in a variety of situations
I’m dreaming every Democrat running for office loses
