An upstate New York mother and her 18-year-old son were killed in a head-on collision on their way back from a college orientation Friday when another motorist swerved into their lane, according to authorities and family friends.
Recent high school grad Colin Ferrell was behind the wheel of a 2015 Acura RDX with his mother Tiffany Ferrell in the passenger seat when they were killed in the daylight crash on Interstate 86 in the town of Chemung at around 5 p.m., New York State police said.
The other driver, Steven Mallory, 36, who was driving a 2018 Nissan Maxima also died at the scene.
Mallory, of Horseheads, was driving westbound when he crossed over the median and into the eastbound lane where he smashed into Ferrell’s car, state police said.

That’s scary! I’m sorry you went through that and sorry for the guy’s loved ones, but glad you survived.
Amen.
metmom: It’s a reasonable conclusion considering the number of fatal accidents like that where the driver who crossed the median turned out to be drunk.
Me: That was my first thought, too. Then I read the article.
That depends on the date and whether you’re westbound.
Catholics get their CARS AND HOUSES BLESSED!
You get your cars and houses blessed. That’s great. I have had my pets blessed.
Are you Catholic?
I don't understand why idiots would automatically presume the driver was driving drunk when the article never made any mention of alcohol.
But then again, FR seems to be going in the same direction as public education.
Yes but I’ve never heard of the blessing of the cars. I did find a page on the USCCB about blessing of objects. It lists cars among the objects so while it’s not something we see around here but is certainly known.
Really??? I remember my father getting his cars BLESSED from 70 years ago!! And EVERY house got blessed also!!
Do you get your pets blessed at Easter time or every time you get a new one?
“What if one or both of those cars was BLESSED??”
Then things get all Monty Python.
It’s something I’ve done a few times. Some parishes will bless animals on the Feast of St. Francis. I will occasionaly drop in when they have one of those.
Why wouldn’t you want your HOME and CAR Blessed??? For SAFETY SAKE!
I guess it never ocurred to me that a Blessing would make something safer.
Very rare that I see news from areas that I grew up in - with the exception of that liberal bastion - Ithaca. Had a lot of relatives living in Chemung and Horseheads many, many years ago. One favorite cousin just sold his home in Horseheads and moved to a retirement community in Richmond, VA - lived all his years in upstate NY - big change but they love the change - no lawn to mow, no snow to shovel, no leaves to rake.. They loved the Finger Lakes and boating but now they have Chesapeake Bay to enjoy..He’s one whose family DID live in Chemung when we were very young...oh! so many years ago!
HELLO!!!!!
Something my father told me many years ago has served me well, and so spared me from four accidents that I can confirm. “Just because the other driver’s turn signal is on, doesn’t mean he’s gonna turn”. I always wait until the driver commits before I pull into their path.
Uber might be too expensive for long distance drive. No mention of drugs or ethanol. Maybe there was a weather related issue, or tiredness, or tire blowout...or texting, or bad news on the phone..or.... Very bad situation any way.......
On a flat road. If his windshield was dirty and driver was facing a setting sun on a slight upward incline he could have been blinded by the sun. If the driver was on a slightly wet road, facing the sun, the suns reflection off the road and sunlight going straight into drivers eyes could have nearly blinded driver..happened to me...
