Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old would-be assassin who shot Donald Trump, was once rejected from his high school rifle club and considered a danger.
The registered Republican and 2022 high school graduate opened fire at the former president with an AR-style rifle from a roof 130 yards from the rally stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday at 6.15pm.
Now, disturbing anecdotes have emerged from those who knew Crooks dating back to his days at Bethel Park High School.
Crooks tried out for the school's rifle team but was turned away because he was a bad shooter, said Frederick Mach, a current captain of the team who was a few years behind Crooks at the school.
Jonathan Myers, a member of the team around the time Crooks auditioned, said there was something ominous about him back then.
He didn't just not make the team, he was asked not to come back because how bad of a shot he was, it was considered like, dangerous,' Myers told ABC News.
Fellow classmate Jameson Murphy added: 'He tried out…and was such a comically bad shot he was unable to make the team and left after the first day.'
Murphy told the New York Post that Crooks once fired a shot that missed his target by almost 20 feet.
Crooks once fired from the seventh lane — the closest lane to the right wall — and hit the left wall, completely missing every target on the back wall. He missed his target by close to 20 feet, Murphy recalled.
Others who were on the team said Crooks would make inappropriate jokes and overall, didn't seem right.

“Kid must have practiced. Alot.”
There are a lot of people on this site saying it was an easy shot.
It absolutely was not. Especially when considering there was a down angle.

“”This kid, at 150 yards, made a great shot,” Pickle said Sunday of the would-be assassin, his voice grim. “I don’t know the specifics of whether he used optics, meaning a scope on his rifle,” he told BI.
“But even with optics, it takes somebody with training to aim at somebody’s head from 150 yards away, and you actually hit the edge of the head,” he said.
“That’s not a lucky shot. That’s a guy who actually shot before.”

Either he did a lot of research and PRACTICE on his own, or he was taught by somebody who knew the craft.
His picture looks like fetal alcohol syndrome.
Creepy, but he looks like he could be the son of 1984 San Ysidro McDonald’s shooter James Huberty.
Presidential candidates often wear body armor. The preferred target for assassins is the head, a much smaller target. He missed because former President Trump turned his head exactly at the right moment for President Trump, and exactly the wrong moment for the would be assassin.
.
He had been spotted. The crowd was pointing, gesturing, and yelling - he had Snipers trained on him. Target was moving.
It’s not exactly like the Range.
Antifa is controlled by the Shadow White House.
He’s been going to the range so could have improved.
Registered Republicans generally don’t give money to act blue?
(He did)
“A mediocre shooter can get a solid hit on a deer-sized target at 130 yards.”
That’s debatable. I recall my first concealed weapons shooting test decades ago. The shooter after me could not hit a man sized target with his revolver at 20 feet. It was just laughable.
Stories of this assassin’s poor shooting capabilities in HS seem to reflect the same, he was laughably poor.
A typical lefty, not good at anything at all. Something like Lee Harvey Oswald.
It’s as if the real shooter was someone other than the 20 year old kid.
Not only do the lefties wear their mask , but do so too tight.
Maybe after Maro Lago didn’t go right for the doj
For most shooting scenarios less than 200 yards, shooting angle isn’t much of an issue.
Flat-shooting calibers from zero to 200 yards have very little drop, so even at an angle of 45 degrees, aiming per usual will yield a typical result.
Where shooting angle has a greater impact is at angles greater than 45 degrees and at distances more than 200 yards.
So they got a ringer to miss President Trump?
What cop confronted the shooter on the rooftop? This is new, and I haven’t seen that in any of the vids.
There is so much mystery about what happened who can say if Crooks was a good shot or a poor one. Yes, he clipped Trump’s ear, and but for a fortuitous turn of his head, it would have been much worse. Still, the bullet had to go somewhere, and he may have just gotten lucky with that one of the six or seven shots he fired.
A head shot at 130 years is pretty good especially with the state of mind he would have been in. Nervous, anxious, enraged, tired, and needed glasses.
If Trump was a teleprompter reader like Obama, with the tennis court head bobbing, he would have been dead. Thank God for his animated speech patterns.
Makes sense.
