There's nothing new in historians claiming that Abraham Lincoln was bisexual or gay. The "theory" took root in the 1970s during the gay awakening and has hung around on the fringes of historical scholarship ever since.
Now, a serious documentary purports to "prove" the point using newly unearthed letters, documents, and photographs. Abraham Lincoln slept in the same bed with men — a common practice in 1840s America where a judicial circuit rider like Lincoln would have been forced to share a bed with other travelers while practicing law — and also wrote "passionately" about male friends and acquaintances.
What the film, “Lover of Men: The Untold History of Abraham Lincoln,” can't prove is that Lincoln had sexual relations with anyone but his wife Mary, who bore him four male children with only Robert living to adulthood.
The 1840s was a far different era with different mores and morals. Male friends bonded on an entirely different level than males do today. The fear of being seen as "gay" hardly existed in the 1840s. Men spoke and wrote more intimately of men than friends do today. It wasn't sexual. The intimacy and love were as intense as male-female bonds but without the sex.
Looking at Lincoln's actions through the lens of hypersexual 21st-century America, it's easy for a filmmaker with an agenda to "prove" Lincoln's sexual orientation. But this is a case of historical relativity. Reporting on Lincoln's sleeping arrangements with men is evidence of nothing. Sleeping with men later in his life wasn't a sign of gayness either. The film might reveal new attitudes by Lincoln toward his friends, but there's no "smoking gun" where Lincoln expresses his desire for sex with any man. If there were, the gay lobby wouldn't be able to shut up about it.

GTFO!
In America, it's clear when have passed that inflection point.
“male-to-male close friendships”
As in father/son or brothers.
The homos want to make out everyone is gay; that comforts them because they are proud but guilty over their perversion. Every time they see a member of the opposite sex, or a baby, they know.
Pretty much since the Middle Ages and likely before it was common for men to share beds, especially at Inn’s and the like which were typically in a “bunk room” type configuration with multiple beds and two men to a bed. Really this was common all the way up until the mid-20th century. I think the biggest sign this was no big deal was that Abraham Lincoln was open about it and nobody else at the time thought it was a bit out of the ordinary. Just another case of trying to apply modern standards to the past.
So, using democrat logic, anyone that votes against Republicans is a homophobe.
“He slept with his bodyguard”
His bodyguard was Alan Pinkerton who I understand was so worried someone would kill Lincoln he slept outside his door. I’m not seeing Pinkerton and Lincoln in a passionate embrace. 😆
He’s dead, leave him be. We don’t need this type of BS speculation as it won’t change that homosexuality is a perversion.
The Army of Satan is always exploring ways to pervert Christian beliefs.
Homosexuals love tearing down icons of virtue, or bravery, or especially, purity. Its part of Satan’s plan to take away HOPE
Elaine: My father thinks George is gay.
Jerry: Because of all the singing?
Elaine: No, he pretty much thinks everyone is gay.
Already happened. It is claimed he is Melungeon.
If this is true, he's part black.
I think the Lincoln presidency was a disaster, but I don't think he was "gay".
Atheist, yes, but "gay"? No.
These are the same people who claim that Jesus Christ was “gay.”
Yeah, but here we are talking about Lincoln.
A cleverer conman there never was.
In 1862, Lincoln met Capt. David Derickson, who served as his bodyguard, providing protection for the president when he commuted from the White House to his cottage at the Soldier’s Home. Lincoln spent about a quarter of his presidency at the cottage, which allowed him some escape from D.C.’s summers and from public interruptions at the White House.
Lincoln and his bodyguard became close, and slept in the same bed: Derickson’s superior, Lt. Col. Thomas Chamberlain, and Tish Fox, the wife of Assistant Navy Secretary Gustavus Fox, both wrote about it. Tish wrote in her diary that Derickson was devoted to Lincoln and “when Mrs. Lincoln was away, they slept together.”
“The president was also not an infrequent visitor in the late afternoon hours, and endeared himself to his guards by his genial, kind ways. He was not long in placing the officers in his two companies at their ease in his presence, and Capts. Derickson and Crozier were shortly on a footing of such marked friendship with him that they were often summoned to dinner or breakfast at the presidential board. Capt. Derickson, in particular, advanced so far in the president’s confidence and esteem that in Mrs. Lincoln’s absence he frequently spent the night at his cottage, sleeping in the same bed with him, and — it is said — making use of his excellency’s nightshirt!”
This was in addition to him having spent years sleeping with Joshua Fry Speed earlier in his life. Don’t give me any nonsense about “well gosh, men slept in the same bed sometimes back then”. No. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....its probably a duck.
Beds were expensive back then. Bed sharing was widespread by many.
You are so gullible.
True
democrats been claiming that since 1860 !
I’m ambivalent on this I don’t know enough
One thing about Lincoln I do admire is his comment I think to Seward about Mary and her difficulties
Seward asked why he put up with it
Lincoln responded “because I love her and if I don’t let her take it out on me she’ll destroy herself instead”
And he was right
ROTF! Excellent satire.
That can only have been satire. “Beds were expensive”. So were nightshirts I guess since his bodyguard shared his too.
