In the Bible, cities, regions, and states that went Sodomite were destroyed by God (e.g. Sodom, Gomorrah, Cities of the plain, Tribe of Benjamin, etc.) God destroyed them because of their militant predations on the innocent. How close do you think we are?

As Hanson notes, this case is “thematic in our study of doomed states,” showing how “allies” pile on to destroy their former friends.

America has been an absolutely terrible ally to everyone for over 60 years. We stab all our friends in the back.

We're gonna pay for that.

Oh, SILLY VICTOR again, since we must be INVINCIBLE. After all, we wouldn’t let a bunch of 1960s Hippies be in the process of starting wars with Russia, China, and Iran, all at the same time, and only after depleting and neglecting our military for the past 35 years, while we CELEBRATED the “End of History”, meaning the end of major wars.

Victor needs to get his head examined, we’ll show him how it’s done!

> “It cannot happen here.” <

That was a good article.

Years ago I read an article about the fall of the Roman Empire. The author listed all the usual reasons. Corruption, barbarians, etc. Then he added one of his own.

The Roman Empire fell because the Romans couldn’t conceive of it falling. The Empire was all-powerful, and evidently eternal. Rome simply could not fall! Impossible! So there was no need to take any corrective action. Party on!

Too many Americans have that same mindset today.

To defend against domestic enemies, never stop speaking the truth about them and never give up your guns. To defend against foreign enemies with weapons of mass extinction, well...

I’m not exactly sure I understand the use of the example.

The persian empire was established and strong.
Alexander was a relative upstart, and while he was winning like a jugurnaut and Thebes probably should have had better intel and been a little more fluid in their strategic thinking, can you really criticize them for being loyal to their alliances, at least on an ethical level?

Also, I’ll take a jab at the title of the book. A lot of conquerors like Alexander or Hannibal did not annihilate their opponents. This was usually reserved for those targets that fully resisted them or betrayed them, and they were made examples of, or it was particularly reserved for their arch enemies (like Darius in Alexander’s case). Many cities, city-states, and armies were spared when they didn’t resist or “opened up their gates” when they arrived. This is because of judicious use of limited assets. If you go mad attacking everyone on every front, you’ll defeat yourself in attrition.

Hanson shows that such an illusion is so persistent that even as the conquered were being slaughtered, they continued to think: “It cannot happen here.”

It can't happen here.

This line made me chuckle. “as opposed to the progressives, who dream “that money, education, and better intentions could arrest the gory arch of history,”

It is a dream and I am glad he said that. Progressives deliver the exact opposite of their supposed dream.

They make people poorer, more ignorant, and their intentions create the downfall and make the gore inevitable.

They run the western world at this time and doom is a work in “progress” as we speak.

Good article.

We feel so invincible that we have a “forward defense” along the border of Russia. Why not a “forward defense” across China’s border too?

In the meantime, tens of millions of illegal aliens have come into the US. Our police have been demoralized and even defunded. Our military has been hollowed out. Our mainstream media (press and Hollywood) have belonged to one party for decades. The Democratic party has successfully blamed America for all the sins of the Democrats (slavery, segregation, systemic racism, etc.). Love of country is now part of a terrorist profile.

The US in its hubris may well be headed for a fall.

It’s already happened. They are just continuing the illusion of a democratic republic as long as possible.

I have to disagree with Hanson on ‘everything ending’. He’s referring to humans. What about all of the other animals and plants? Suppose we’re annihilated. Not a big deal to a fish. Aren’t they God’s children too?

We’re damaging the planet more than the fish. Furthermore, the fish must love the rising sea level if that’s actually happening. And the plants must love the additional CO2 if that’s happening.

We are not invincible. However, if we have a complete restoration of our Constitutional Republic, including elimination of the 17th Amendment and have Senators picked by State Legislatures as intended (not popular vote) this would be a huge start putting the grand old men closer to the voting citizenry for their office.

Citizens elect their state legislator whom in turn then elects a Federal Senator.... that all changed in 1913 the same year the “Federal” Reserve Bank came into being and also a thorough rewrite of Federal Income Tax. Pre- WWI and during the pre WWI Depression of Woodrow Wilson— not a good time, and it was demonrats who did ALL of this. (Sen.Aldrich, JPMorgan his-self and a slew of big banksters, Rockefellers etc.).

Regardless, their respective fates were sealed because of their weak military, their naivete, their long decline, and the military genius and resources of their attackers.

***********

Sounds like we're on that path.
