A United Airlines jet lost a landing-gear wheel during take off from Los Angeles, but was able to land safely in Denver, its planned destination, with no injuries, the airline said.
“The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” United said in a statement on Monday. It was the second such incident for the airline this year.

Back in the late 1990s, I was in the market for a light pickup-truck. I saw a Ford Ranger flip the way that Kia did; the driver was unscathed.
That settled it for me ... I bought a Ranger.

Yep, looks stupid, and the stress on the front suspension, hub, bearings, and lugnuts is mostly ignored.
About a year ago, a twentysomething fellow was visiting a family down the road from our house. He had just turned onto our road and his large diameter, big offset left front wheel came off, and there he sat. His old truck probably wasn’t worth as much as he spent on his big flashy wheels and tires.
Some states have laws against tires sticking out beyond the fenders, some don’t.
Another problem is there are more chipped and cracked windshields from that fashion trend, as the tires can throw more rocks without fenders interfering.
Loading 300 children on the plane didn’t help.

Sounds like a maintenance issue.
