A United Airlines jet lost a landing-gear wheel during take off from Los Angeles, but was able to land safely in Denver, its planned destination, with no injuries, the airline said.

“The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” United said in a statement on Monday. It was the second such incident for the airline this year.

The book is mostly about music, but I think there is a chapter on Boeing too.

These articles keep linking things to Boeing but the reality here is just piss poor maintenance and QA issues at the airline. Look at the quality of the workers and maintenance practices.

Boeing has some serious problems but this is like doing an like changing on your car, you drain the oil, put in a new oil filter and drive 40 miles and the engine seizes up because you forgot put oil back in. It’s not the car manufacturers fault.

“The aircraft involved in Monday’s incident was a nearly 30-year-old Boeing 757-200...”

In March, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 jet headed for Japan lost a tire mid-air after takeoff from San Francisco, landing safely at Los Angeles International Airport.

The wheel landed on a car in an airport employee parking lot, breaking a car window, but no one was hurt.

There’s a ‘tribute’ band from Atlanta called “Departure” that does a really good imitation of Journey. Their lead singer even looks like theirs..................

Not sure how these aircraft wheels are done now, but years ago I did aircraft maintenance and the wheels were idiot proof. You’d tighten a nut until a couple holes lined up. At that point, you put a pin through the hole, like a cotter key, that prevented the nut from backing out. For inspection, you simply had to make sure the pin was in place. Nearly impossible to screw up, I wouldn’t think they’d change that simple system, but who knows

Wheels coming off of vehicles on the road is far more common these days. As an OTR truck driver, I saw that happen probably a dozen times a year. And while it does happen to big trucks, it’s rare. People wanting their car or pickup to look ‘cool’, are becoming an increasingly dangerous issue on the roads. They want their tires to stick out beyond the fenders by wheels with more offset, which puts stress on the wheel bearings and lugnuts.

Insurance companies need to make it clear that they will refuse to insure, or declare an insurance policy invalid, on vehicles that have after market wheels that are not the same offset dish as stock rims.

This victim of an idiot survived with minor injuries.....

Apparently, like iBiden, no one could tell him a thing, either.

There were many that were warning how dangerous the craft was.

I’m always amazed by those who think that 11,500-12,500
feet down in the ocean is no big deal.

The way I read it its more about United airlines than Boeing......having said that, I spent 36 years in aviation maintenance and I totally agree with you, it’s lack of QA and maintenance practices and habits.

17 years in QA I can tell you bad maintenance habits can spread through a plant like a virus and once it gets started it can be difficult to get a handle on.

You raise a good point. I have an older pocket rocket. I bought the car with a turbo 290HP engine. After market kits soon became available to juice it to 400HP and above. I considered the upgrade but knew darn well I need to get insurance company approval...
