A Proclamation by King George III many of our subjects misled by a desperate conspiracy of dangerous and ill- designing men have forgotten the allegiance which they owe to the power that has protected and supported them and have declared rebellion and traitorously levied war against us it is the better part of wisdom to put a speedy end to such disorders we have thought fit to issue our Royal Proclamation that all our Royal officers both civil and Military are obliged to suppress such rebellion and bring the traitors to Justice when the unhappy and deluded multitude against whom this Force shall be directed shall become sensible of their error I shall be ready to receive the misled with tenderness and mercy. For those who persist in their treason the punishment shall be death by hanging.

Watch these in order. And if your eyes begin to fog as you hear and watch the Henry Lee Proposition read on July 2, 1776, then know that our Nation will Stand, then as now in the face of the monstrous calumnies spewed by the enemies of Liberty. Long live the United States of America. God Shed his Grace on us- we must always remember the bravery and brilliance of our Founders-3 Equal Branches of Government, checked and balanced powers. Genius to escape the evils of monarchic Europe and the rest of the World. Say a prayer of Blessing.
The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.—I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.
This is the origin of our tradition of fireworks on Independence Day.
The future second President of the United States proclaimed it.

Great letter from Adams!
All here should note that during the vote- at the very last minute—Delegate from Delaware (of all places) Caesar Rodney (who had facial cancer and wrapped his head with green silk) rode 80 miles (switching horses) 48 hours to make the vote and break a potential NO vote to declare Independance. Exhausted covered in mud and what all- he collapse in his chair to vote as chair of their delegation. A close thing such resolution.
Here it is: John Adams to Abigail Adams, 3 July 1776

Independence without unanimity means nothing.
Yes. Despite being depicted as near-death in the Broadway musical 1776, Rodney died in 1784.
After the vote for Independency, Rodney served in the Second Continental Congress for the rest of the year, and then became the 4th governor of Delaware from 1778 to 1781.
Rodney died June 26, 1784 at age 55.

Yeah- ironic, but we have something to say about it happening, as in-— Hell No!
That is what both Benjamin Franklin and John Adams said- and concurring with them was Thomas Jefferson.
The phrase became: “All 13 clocks must strike the hour at the same time”. Unanimity. As to revolution anyway.
It’s a great series, very emotional and accurate at the same time. HBO Adams series. The guy playing Jefferson was brilliant, and Washington was eerily like a clone physically (didn’t get a VA accent right, but whatever).
Thanks for posting it.
I had seen none of it.
It seems to be historically accurate, which is the main criterion for judging it, in my opinion.
It did seem a bit melodramatic in the acting. They all seemed scared or worried.
They were all people of political connections and interactions with British royal agents, commissioners, and military local leaders. Once they got the response from George III, and knowing they were committed to Independence, they knew that if they were caught- they’d be hanged. It was no small thing, and so, they were brave. Every brave man, decorated or not will tell you they were scared. Medal of Honor recipients (living) will tell you they were scared, military men may gloss but most would tell you without training they would have been frozen in place.
I know all that, of course.
I’m saying they really telegraphed it.
Overdid it and it felt like a modern or contemporary portrayal.
I believe it would have in fact energized them knowing they were being taken deadly seriously and scaring the King.
