The priest's confession: What the Catholic bishops knew - The Fifth Estate
youtube ^ | Feb 17 2020 | The Fifth Estate

In 2015, retired Catholic priest Paul-André Harvey from Quebec's Chicoutimi diocese pleaded guilty to 39 charges of indecent assault and gross indecency. Most of his victims were girls between the ages of eight and 10. Harvey was sentenced to six years in prison.

But before Harvey died in prison, the defrocked priest did something extraordinary — he provided a confession for his victims to use in a class-action suit against the Catholic Church. He claimed that church officials were aware of his crimes for years. When complaints surfaced, Harvey says he was simply moved. Records show between 1963 and 2002, Harvey was moved to a new parish 12 times.

Now a class-action lawsuit with more than 100 claimants shines a spotlight on who knew what and raises difficult questions about how clergy abuse is prosecuted in Canada. The Fifth Estate and Radio-Canada’s Enquête investigate Harvey’s story and ask why no charges have ever been brought against church superiors in Canada for covering up clergy abuse.

Terrible. That was the procedure before 2002. The priest would confess to his transgressions and promise not to do it anymore. He’d go to a spiritual retreat where he’d be rehabilitated and sent on his way. Who are the Bishops to judge if a fellow priest swears it won’t happen again and mental health professionals sign off on them?

We see the same thing happening in our current society when judges let criminals go if they plead guilty and say they won’t do it again. BTW I’d love to see the comparable stats regarding other religious clergy because I can guarantee it happens in other faiths too.

Same priests swore to their Gawd to respect celibacy, and broke that promise.
You have to be either terminally stupid or in on “it” to be such a Bishop.
Yeah, you can forgive his sin and then pitch him out of church. Anything less than that — he has piccies of you.

Real shame that you, just like the hierarchy would rather see such atrocities within the catholic church covered up rather than be exposed.

Since recent discussions on the religion forum have been debating who are the intercessors within the catholic church, I just thought I’d highlight some of those who catholics choose for such “intercession” between man and God.

BTW, there remains ONLY One Mediator between man and God. And He was Crucified.

My point is not to defend the sexual abuse and the cover-ups, but to say that faithful Catholics are also appalled by these developments. But you use these things to smear Catholicism as a whole. You totally ignore the sex scandals and financial scandals and theological abominations that are also very common in Protestantism (e.g., the “prosperity” gospel and pro-gay and pro-abortion policies)), as much or more so as in Catholicism, but which receive far less publicity.

Then I can only assume that you also frown upon your fellow catholics here at FR who post anti Protestant posts on a daily basis?

Sin is everywhere there are humans.

Rome covered so up by enabling it to continue.

Even now, the Vatican is rampant with gays - as well as the priesthood.

Both known and allowed.

They need to clean house.

Pedophile priests were sent to Alaska as “punishment”. It was like turning kids loose in a candy store. These pedophile priests proceeded to rape their way across Alaska in village after village. Their horrific atrocities came to light when Alaska’s largest newspaper published an expose in the 90s. Ever since then I’ve viewed the catholic church with utter disgust and contempt. It is nothing more than a corrupt evil organization run by and for sexual deviants.

Spot on!!!

What’s really sad is, knowing all this, yet still, so many remain that view the office of catholic priest as an intercessor between themselves and God.

Any abuse by clergy is indefensible, but the reason that the incidence of it rose, astronomically in the 70s and 80s no one wants to openly admit.

Yes, sexual abuse of children has always happened in any organization that puts adults in positions of power and access of children, child predators are going to go where the children are.

The marked increase that happened in this time however, is due to something greater than “protecting the church”. In the late 60s they began to allow open homosexuals in the priesthood... it takes 8 years before you are allowed in parrishes as a priest.

So, the marked increase in the mid 70s onward, well, you can track it right back to that decision. Compound it with the fact that now homosexuals are trading sexual favors amongst each other as well, when one of them gets caught with kids, its not simply a matter of protecting the church, its about protecting their homosexual cabal, because it will come back on them if one of them is doing this, it exposes them all.

Benedict attempted to take on this homosexual Cabal within the church, and vastly underestimated its power and entrenchment and no matter what they tell you, there is no doubt in my mind this is why he was forced into retiring.

The current Pope either is a homosexual, or completely owned and controlled by this cabal.

When we have corrupt senators, the thing to do is blame the constitution and end this republic like we leave the Church when priests go against everything the Church ever has stood for. Or a bad pope. The Church is Jesus’ Bride. The evil men are that, working for his bride under trust.

The film shows the longtime Philadelphia DA, Lynne Abraham, speaking about her ground-breaking courage in going up against the bishops in a city whose population was more than half Catholic, and Democrat by a sizeable majority. She is one of the most skilled, courageous, tough-on-crime and respectable attorneys I have ever known—the opposite of Philly today. Even as a Democrat (it’s virtually impossible to get elected in Philly as a Republican), she did a fantastic job, as her 15-year tenure attests. But during the Obie admin, she lost to (and was opposed at every turn by) the A-A political machine. They didn’t want no death-penalty DA.

I agree with everything you wrote. Homosexuality has been the root cause of many of our problems, especially in the Catholic Church, along with the liberal agenda overall.

One of my best friends from college came from a devout Catholic family. Her uncle was a well-known psychology professor who was found to be instrumental in emptying out several female orders due to his writings in the 60s and 70s that claimed the sisters were being “oppressed by the patriarchy” in the Church. He was hailed by the left for his teachings, but in reality he abhorred what had happened to the convents and spent his remaining days trying to repent for what he had done.

Nonsense. You’re smearing with an awfully big brush there, fella. Protestants have their fair share of sexual deviants.

How well did the Canadian witch hunt against Catholic schools go a few short years ago? I expect this new ignominious crusade to end just as poorly.

The difference is that pedophilia is enshrined in catholic culture and is tacitly approved at all levels of the church hierarchy. That doesn't exist among the numerous independent Protestant denominations.
