The Hamptons are Martha's Vineyard South. A resort for wealthy New York hedonists that does not require a ferry or airplane to reach. I suppose the working people and permanent residents are conservative, unlike Martha's Vineyard. MV became a summer retreat in the 19th Century before air conditioning but when railroads could get you to the steamship ferry.
