The Hamptons are Martha's Vineyard South. A resort for wealthy New York hedonists that does not require a ferry or airplane to reach. I suppose the working people and permanent residents are conservative, unlike Martha's Vineyard. MV became a summer retreat in the 19th Century before air conditioning but when railroads could get you to the steamship ferry.
Went to the Hamptons frequently, most often Southampton, before Michael Douglas’ Wall St made it all the rage. It was nice, peaceful, and without pretense. Westhampton was more of a recreational area for the younger crowds. I’m referring to the late 70s. Also plenty of vehicle beach access at the time.
