I heard an unusually loud aircraft fly over my house. I looked on Flightradar24 and it's an Antonov An-124. It was flying at about 2000 feet at 191 knots. I think it is landing in Mobile, Alabama. It is not squawking an ident and is listed as "N/A" with no origin or destination. Just thought this is very unusual. Posted in chat so don't come at me.

“I heard an unusually loud aircraft fly over my house...and it’s an Antonov An-124”

Be nice if the US kept some air defenses around, rather than sending it all to Ukraine. If we did, this crap wouldn’t be happening.

IIRC, there are some private air freight outfits flying the Russian stuff.

“sending it all to Ukraine”

So what % of US air defense systems do you think are in Ukraine, of the total available, in service or in reserve.

Numbers please.

When I worked at Raytheon, we hired an AN-124 from Volga-Dnieper to carry a bunch of Patriot ground equipment to Riyadh. This was a Russian company, I believe, but the reference to Dnieper was to associate it with Ukraine. The Antonov design bureau was located in Ukraine. The freight charge New Hampshire to Riyadh was one million clams. I don’t think there was any other commercial means of transporting. The equipment was insured for one-million bucks, and arrived without incident.

Operation Christmas Child used a Russian plane in Charlotte.

The equipment was insured for 160 million bucks.

They are used to transport extra-large items. I missed seeing one used years ago on a project I was working on.

All good information but the not squawking is a little suspicious. Not many commercial cargo planes fly around without identifying themselves.

Just for general information it did indeed land at the Brookley Field downtown airport and dropped off Flightradar24.

“All good information but the not squawking is a little suspicious. “

It had to be squawking to be identified.

“It had to be squawking to be identified.”

I thought I might not be using the correct terminology but no origin, no destination, and no owner are unusual for a commercial aircraft.

The Antonov An-124 Ruslan is a large, strategic airlift, four-engined aircraft.

I wondered why such a plane was landing anywhere in the U.S., unless someone outside of Russia bought it.

Likely it is being used by the company “Air Charter Services”, a company in the U.k. They do fly some Antonov An-124. They offer a variety of aircraft for business and leisure purposes, including private jets, helicopters, executive airliners, and cargo aircraft.

What you heard was swamp gas.

What you were tracking on your computer was ball swamp gas electrons on the power lines.
