My wife and I will be celebrating our 50th on 24Aug2024. I tell people that I can remember our life50 years ago like it was yesterday. So I have a hard time quantifying the ensuing 50 years. It has been a great time with NO REGRETS. We have 3 daughters and 10 grandchildren who are the spices our life. God willing we will celebrate our 100th on 24Aug 2074. My parents were together 55 years. Mom died and Dad followed just 6 months later.

Mine were much the same. Mom died a few months after Dad after 58 years married. The hospice nurse was trained to ask probing questions to see if the patient is afraid of dying.

“Do you believe you will see your husband again?” she asked.

“Depends it it's a nice day,” my mom replied.

“Why is that?” the nurse asked.

“If it's a nice day, he'll be playing golf.”

Els is the woman. Jan is the man.

Jan, pronounced “Yahn” in Dutch, is the Dutch name for John.

It’s the inspiration for the word “Yankees.” New York was settled in the 1600s by the Dutch, many of whom did dairy farming and made cheese. The English settlers used the name “John Cheese” for the Dutch everyman (ike John Doe), which was pronounced “yahn kees” in Dutch.
