What needs to be remembered is that Ukraine knows how Russia treated Poland back then. For this reason they do not trust the Russians today.

The best insurance for him to live up to his statements was to get involved to resolve the issues he had. But that was never done. Trump got impeached for even asking Zelenskyy if he would look into the matter of Biden in Ukraine for demanding the firing of the prosecutor Viktor Shokin. So he backed off of the Ukraine issue, but Putin made no overtures of invading Ukraine either.
Shortly after the invasion began, Zelenskyy and Putin had come to an agreement where Russia would return back to Ukraine all land they occupied, other than the Crimea which they considered to not only be a matter of national security, but that was rightfully Russian territory. Acquired, not from Ukraine, but from the Ottoman Empire. All Putin required of Ukraine in return was for Ukraine to remain neutral and not join NATO.
But then along came Boris Johnson and convinced Zelenskyy not to make peace with Russia, because Russia could not be trusted.

One last thing to consider is how this Biden administration & the Obama administration have lied about and vilified Russia & Putin with propaganda. An easy sale after our decades long Cold War with the USSR.
Your whole premise is based solely upon propaganda, and there is nothing that you can point to that unequivocally provides proof that the intention was to take Ukraine and to then continue the westwardly march across Europe. That was just fear mongering employed to play upon the fears of our citizens to generate support for the vile & evil plot to make Ukraine the vassal state of the United States.
We have been living in the illusion created by the crooks of both political parties who figured out how to capture the nation for their own personal enrichment, while screwing over the average American citizen. Citizens who had no real aspirations to become influential, but rather just live their lives in peace as they raised their families, and provide for them as best as they could.
You need to wake up to that reality & realize the riches that come from making Ukraine the vassal state of the criminals controlling this nation. Not only does Ukraine have vast quantities of natural resources worth trillions, it also provides a wonderfully operated money laundering operation that can be used to enrich themselves via the Treasury of the bloated leviathan they have also created. Once the Ukraine war does come to and end, the American taxpayers will be presented the new bill for the rebuilding of Ukraine, while out nation continues to crumble. The criminals will be enriched by kickbacks from Black Rock who has made agreements with Ukraine in the rebuilding projects.
Another way the enrich themselves is with continuous wars that not only fails to provide this nation with security, but actually makes the world far more unstable ensuring that more wars will crop up to justify addition involvement on this nations part. They get not only kickbacks, but also from stock investments they bought knowing that an upcoming war was being planned. After all, they have established the U.S. as the world's policemen/protectors though various agreements and pacts sold as guarantees to provide security & stability to the American public. You know like NATO along with our guarantees to protect Taiwan & other nations that are not our nation. All designed to profit off of the military-industrial complex.
This is supposed to be an awakening process, but some people, sadly enough, still do not see the scam, even though they realize that our government seems to be counterproductive on numerous levels.
Some blame Democrats, while others blame Republicans. Women blame men, straights blame gays while gays blame the straight people, anti-religious blame the religious & vice versa.
In reality that is all part of the plan to sow division and create the distraction that places the blame elsewhere other than where it actually belongs, on the criminals who have captured control of the nation.

Law-and-Order was to be employed to control citizen behaviors, or rather misbehaviors, according to the norms/morals established by the various peoples that lived within those smaller areas of local divisional control, that again would be controlled by the citizens of those smaller areas, as long as they fell within the dictates laid out in the U.S. Constitution and her amendments, of which the first 10 were called The Bill of Rights. These rights do not come from the Constitution, but are recoined as being from the creator himself. The Constitution merely codifies those rights emanating from the creator as what will be the rights accepted in the Constitution.
