June 26 (UPI) -- Residents of a Missouri city are being warned to keep their distance from an alligator on the loose in a local lake.

The Bonne Terre Municipal Police Department said the alligator was reported in Bonne Terre Lake by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Authorities said the gator is about 20 inches long, but some witnesses who spotted the reptile said it appeared to be closer to 3 feet long.
The reptile is not believed to be aggressive, but police warned residents not to attempt to approach or capture it.
Police said the alligator is believed to be a pet that escaped or was abandoned by its owner.
Alligators are legal to keep as pets in Missouri and only need to be registered with the state if they exceed 8 feet long.

I never understand how people can think alligators are pets.
Alligators are not native to Missouri, but we do have the Ozark Hellbender which can grow to almost 2 feet long.

Anything on that side of I-44 in MO is South. In the summer it’s hot and humid enough.
They aren’t, so look for recent transplants from Florida who are missing a pet they brought with them.
I’d love to have a few of them in my pond. Maybe they would eat these Canadian geese.
Alligators like (to eat) birds.
Most likely somebody’s pet was released. It wouldn’t survive winters in Missouri.
I have seen gators as far north as North Carolina.
The burrow into the banks of lakes an drivers, probably 3-5 feet underground, and hibernate for extended periods.
They survived all the Ice Ages.................
Depends on whether it's a white community or a black community.
