June 25 (UPI) -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation apologized for a highway sign that misspelled the world "Central" as "Cenrtal."
Drivers on Cottman Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia noticed the new sign directing travelers to southbound Interstate 95 read, "Cenrtal Phila," and photos of the sign quickly went viral Monday.
PennDOT apologized Tuesday on social media.
"We were so focused on getting this done and reopening the 95 Cottman ramp that we moved a little too quickly... and forgot to proofread. Sorry, Philadelphia," the post said.
The post was accompanied by a photo of the corrected "Central Phila" sign.

I once spelled “public” as “pubic” on an official document. Damn spell checker missed it.
The fact that FOUR WORDS on a sign need to be proofread is depressing.
DEI.
Were they able to use swatches to patch it up or did they have to print an entirely new sign? Sometimes the letters can be corrected with strip-ons like the ones you put on your license plate each year.
I worked on the Public Works Dept. You have no idea! LOL.

It could have happened like this: first, there was a typo; second, the proofreader(s) looked at it and thought it was spelled right.
AI isn’t just limited to computers.
The guys putting up the sign were just following orders even if they recognized the screw-up. Probably especially so. They were not about to make a decision beyond their paygrade and disrupt the chain of command and maybe get fired from their cushy six-figure govt job. So it took social media to get it straightened out. How government works.
Just trying to accomodate dyslexic drivers.
ODE TO A SPELL CHECKER

It came with my pea sea.
It plane lee marks four my revue

Eye ran this poem threw it,

Its vary polished in it’s weigh,
My checker tolled me sew.
A check her is a bless sing;
It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
And aides me when aye rime.
Each frays come posed up on my screen,
Eye trussed too bee a joule;
The checker pours o’er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule.
Bee fore wee rote with checkers
Hour spelling was inn deck line,
Butt now when wee dew have a laps,
Wee are knot maid too wine.
Butt now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flare,
There are know faults with in my cite,
Of nun eye am a wear.
Now spelling does knot phase me,
It does knot bring a tier;
My pay purrs awl due glad den
With wrapped words fare as hear.
To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud;
And we mussed dew the best wee can
Sew flaws are knot aloud.
That’s why eye brake in two averse
Cuz eye dew want too please.
Sow glad eye yam that aye did bye

Given Philly literacy rates, I’m shocked anyone noticed
Given how screwed up Philly is I’m even more shocked that anyone even cared
I once misspelled a Judge’s name in a court filing. What’s worse is that it was the same name as the courthouse’s namesake (his father). It was, um, commented on in the decision.
The responsible DEI employee aksed not to be identified......
