"Kind of an insult to those who fought and died for a democratic Vietnam."

Obama was the one who began normalizing relationships with Vietnam. He lifted the arms embargo in May 2016. John Kerry as Sec. of State was involved.

I'm glad my Vietnam Vet brother wasn't alive when it happened. It would have made him feel his time over there was even more worthless than it already was.

"True. But we did it with Japan and Germany as well."

Those were different times. China, Iran, and the Middle East weren't what they are today.

"China is allied with Russia."

They have been, on and off for many years. It's not just recent.

Just like Russia was allied with Nazi Germany, for awhile.

"Time heals all wounds...."

For some it does, but not all. If we forget the lessons of history, we tend to repeat it.

"Too many of my brother remain missing and they’ve done much of nothing to say what happened to most of them."

Thank you for your service. My brother was a U.S. Army Vietnam Vet, 25th Infantry Division, Cu Chi, Vietnam 1966-67. I was his baby sister, and this shit incenses me.

"I wonder if such a realization might work in Ukraine?"

All Ukraine is, is just another proxy war with Russia, just like Vietnam was nothing more than a proxy war with China and Russia. Wasted lives, wasted money, but the politicians sure got rich.

"Vietnam was smart enough to figure it out 40 years ago that Communism doesn’t work."

China made it look like it had moved away from communism too, but only to get more heavily into international trading to bolster their economy. It was done to fool the rest of the world about how much they changed, and it succeeded.

July 11, 1995 – President William J. Clinton announces “normalization of relations” with Vietnam. August 6, 1995 – Secretary of State Warren Christopher visits Hanoi and officially opens the U.S. Embassy.

"In other words, Vietnam is acting in their own self-interest."

It won't matter in the end, if NATO and Joe get everybody nuked over Ukraine.

"Vietnam is pandering to both Russia and the USA."

Vietnam is using the U.S. for their own needs. If something better comes along in the future, they'll be gone was Speedy Gonzales.

My father did not forget what he went through on New Guinea or the invasion of Leyte, Philippians. He was there when MacArthur came ashore on the third day and said I have returned. He left that island on a hospital ship. Was in the hospital for six weeks.

He wore dentures the rest of his life. He had a scar on the top of his head from a bullet that penetrated his helmet but not his skull. However, the bullet wound near his appendix gut infected in the jungle environment.

So, it took him almost 40 years to buy a car made in Japan.
Maybe because by the early 1980s American cars SUCKED. Prior to that he had mostly bought GM products. We had a couple Buick Rivera’s. An International Travelall. A Chevrolet Camaro. A Cadillac Eldorado. Then the Honda Accord.

People all talk about how EVIL the Nazis were during WW2.
However, the Germans/Nazis actually treated both British and US/Cnadian POWs pretty well. They were horrible to the Russians.

The Japanese did NOT treat US or British or Australians well at all. Some of that is their culture. Meaning that if you as a soldier did not fight to the death and surrendered you were considered a coward. Therefore, in their eyes you did not deserve to be treated well because you were not honorable.

The Japanese thought they were the Master Race of Asia/Pacific. They were brutal to the mainland Chinese people.
No wonder they are so afraid of the Chinese today. They know how they treated them in the early 1940s.

Tell the North to free the South back to a free and independent country and we will guarantee their freedom, safety and near unlimited trade. Otherwise, hello Beijing.

The mass exterminations of multiple groups of people including Romany gypsies, Jews and Disabled people as well as grotesque medical experiments and forced labor tend to skew opinions.

Like so many on FR, I spent a year+ in Vietnam. Never thought I’d see this kind of news. But I never thought all my shirts would be made in Vietnam either.

Thanks for reminding me of that. It was scumbags McCain and Kerry who pushed Clinton to lift the trade embargo. Clinton, Kerry and McCain were like a traveling side-show back then, Clinton using McCain and Kerry as his frontmen, because he'd been a draft-dodger, and there was a lot of blowback from Vets who were against normalization with Vietnam.

I now remember that back then, Kerry and McCain wanted Clinton to visit the Vietnam Wall, and I believe FR was involved in fighting it. I believe there was a link provided on FR, for a site where you could request a bunch of pre-printed postcards for people to fill out, demanding that Clinton not show his face at the Wall. The postcards were addressed to The White House. I handed out a bunch at work, and filled out one myself, and afterwards, I got audited by the IRS. They had nothing on me, because I never ever claimed any dependents, or had any assets to report. I always used the short form for my Federal taxes, so they can't tell me that my audit wasn't connected with that postcard I sent.

And of course McCain got 20 Republican senators to flip for him to vote for his and Kerry's Bill to give Clinton the power to normalize relationships. Obama furthered the normalization by lifting the arms embargo on Vietnam.

You are correct. I don’t consider a Democrat administration American. Bigger enemy than Russia or China...at the moment.

Did you look at the date in my post?

“The U.S. embargo on Vietnam was eventually lifted in February 1994. Formal normalization occurred in 1995”
