"Vietnam stands ready to work with the United States to advance a comprehensive strategic partnership for effective, stable, and meaningful development based on respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions," Bui Thanh Son said after the meeting.

At the same time, Kritenbrink reaffirmed the US commitment to supporting "a strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous Vietnam."

It is also interesting that Mr. Kritenbrink arrived in Vietnam just a day after Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited the country. His visit resulted in the signing of more than a dozen agreements on bilateral cooperation in education, medicine, energy, and defense.

Irony of ironies for those with a bit of perspective.

Well, apparently now Vladimir Putin knows what it feels like to get, slapped in the face with a dead fish.

On a more serious note, I am sure that one of the very biggest issues for the Vietnamese is their security and their freedom to trade with whomever it is that they wish to. Putin can never guarantee that against China, nor do I believe that he would have done so even if his country had the ability to pull that off. Frankly, I have doubts about whether we can pull that off, but from the Vietnamese point of view, there is no other alternative other than bending a knee to the Chinese, which they will never do. By throwing in with us, they also become part of the coalition of nations that is attempting to contain China, which includes India, Australia, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea. I am sure that that gives them some degree of comfort.

Makes a bit of sense.

East Asian countries don’t want to become vassal states of China.

China is allied with Russia.

They say you can’t buy your allies, but you can rent them.
I wonder what it cost us to outbid the Russians?

They must have heard how generous the US taxpayers are with foreign aid.

Maybe ask at the next BRICS summit.

Thailand and Malaysia seem to be coming onboard.
Vietnam willing to stay on the outside?

Kind of an insult to those who fought and died for a democratic Vietnam.

During the Cold War, it was said that the Soviet Union is the only country in world surrounded by hostile communist neighbors. The Russians just have the knack for making enemies.

Of course USA is a strategic partner.

If we don’t make it, we design and outsource it.

Vietnam wants prosperity for their people and Russia ain’t got nothing the world actually wants.

True. But we did it with Japan and Germany as well.

Also due to Russian threats.

The real life Asian version of the 1959 classic movie "The Mouse that Roared".

I read that Canada is the second largest, though I believe much of the upper half is only marginally or (un)inhabitable due to cold, and inaccessibility issues.
