Shocking video shows driver mowing down cyclists on Texas freeway
Daily Mail UK ^ | June 19, 2024 | Bethan Sexton

A suspected drunk driver has been arrested after mowing down two cyclists on a road near Dallas Fort Worth airport.

Benjamin Hylander, 31, is accused of ramming his white Subaru SUV into the back of Cynthia, 68, and Thomas Geppert, 69.

Shocking video showed the vehicle slamming into the back of Cynthia before driving over Thomas after knocking him to the ground.

The incident took place on Monday and was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by a user who confirmed the driver did not stop to aid the victims.

The video shows two cyclists riding side by side in the inside lane of the freeway.

Suddenly the Subaru emerges in the distance and is seen barreling towards them.

The vehicle continues to bomb down the road before ramming into the back of one of the cyclist, knocking them into the road.

The car then swerves and clips the back wheel of the other cyclist, sending him sprawling to the floor.

The vehicle then speeds over his limp body with first the front then back wheel, crushing the man into the ground.

As the clip ends the car is seen speeding off in the outside lane.

TribalPrincess2U said “horses” not an Apatosaurus, although that would pull be serious horse power.

Well, thanks for the further correction.

Good thing I didn’t try to write the story for British consumption.

“75, 80 and 85 depending on where they are. Driving across Texas can be a chore.”

85? No freaking way! No guy on a bike can even go that fast. Plus a car is on a bike before the driver realizes what he’s looking at. That is just way too dangerous for bikes to be on that road then the cyclists take up the whole freaking road!

I watched the video, the driver swerved to miss the biker in the road but because he was knocked in the fast lane the driver still ran over him. If the bikers had been riding to the right they would have not been hit.

“This is a four lane dived highway so the drunk could have move over to the left lane to pass like everyone else.”

He couldn’t move over due to the other car.

“No idea why, and it makes no sense the way they do it.”

Brits drive on the left.

“riding side by side in the inside lane of the freeway”

They were riding the outside lane…DailyMail is UK, where they drive in the opposite direction (left vs right) which would be the inside lane.

Knights of old

Driving on the left side goes back to Medieval England where Knights would ride their horses on the left side of the road so if they encountered an enemy their sword hand would be on the right side.

England has never let go of this, and is still ready to sword fight to this day.

On a four-lane divided highway, the Brits call the lane closest to the median the outside lane and the lane closest to the side of the road the inside lane. We call the lane closest to the median the inside lane and the lane closest to the side of the road the outside lane. That is the difference I was referring to, and it has nothing to do with driving on the left or on the right.

What you just said is illegal and dangerous. You should stay off the road then.

#24: "I assure you I’m not a lesbian."

I believe you. Absolutely. You are definitely NOT a lesbian!

I like Subaru's too. I'd drive one except there seems to have been some quality issues the past few years. I'd have to research it to be sure.

I remember when they first came to America. A little hole-in-the-wall "dealer" had a couple in stock. I tried it out, but the leg room was a little cramped for me, otherwise I would have bought it.

That was quite a while back. I'm sure they've improved the leg room since then.

I almost killed a guy who was splitting lanes on his high end bike in all his cycling gear, pedaling at high speed down the middle of the road between two lanes of traffic, one totally stopped, as I pulled through a hole in stopped traffic to take a left turn.

It was the most congested and dangerous intersection in my commute.

I had PSTD for about six months over that. Sure. I wasn’t injured and that guy nearly got killed.

But for about six months, every time my mind was not occupied, that super slow motion high definition video of the guy somersaulting over the hood of my car in tandem with his somersaulting bike, his bare calves, his biking shoes, spinning through the air. After a while, I thought I was over it, until I was totally relaxed watching a movie where a cyclist hit a car, and I nearly had a nervous breakdown, almost breaking the television controller in half to shut the TV off.

But I am sure there are cyclists who would label me an “idiot driver” too.

And I have to deal with that because that guy was splitting the lanes which is absolutely insane and irresponsible especially where he was doing it, and doing it during rush hour. I had to go to court against my insurance company to contest a surcharge, and my insurance company dropped me after nearly fifty years of no accidents. The court ruled for me, but I bitterly resented having to go to court for that. I felt anger at that guy having the gall to sue my insurance company for money, and me having to go to court, getting dumped by my insurer and losing a day of pay at work.

I understand why he did it, if I had a debilitating injury, I might go after any money I can as he did. I try not to hold it against him.

While I felt terrible about the guy, the cop interviewing me told me with a degree of sympathy as I stood there in shock, that cyclists “sometimes don’t obey the rules of the road”, and I do feel anger about that guy driving his bike like that at that time, in that place.

I began getting up at 4:30 AM to go to work to avoid hitting any traffic at that intersection, and my heartbeat actually picks up as my anxiety ramps up, even today. And when I see bikes on the road as I occasionally do when there are twenty of them at a time on a curving back road where I cannot pass, and am forced to do 18 mph in a 30 mph zone for about a mile, I feel extreme anxiety, anger and resentment, because my Leftist state has seen fit to allow them to take the entire lane on this road.

I don’t ride my bike on any roadways anymore if I can avoid it, only bike trails. I don’t begrudge cyclists the road, and when I drive my bike on a road, I put myself in danger by squeezing as far to the right as I can, even hazarding potholes and such in the narrow foot-wide area to the right of the solid white line.

All that said, this driver should pay the price for what he did, if he was indeed drunk, or if he was even just looking down at his cell phone. I don’t think the cyclists should be there, and I don’t think they should be able to take up the lane, but if that is the law that they can, then that is the law, however stupid I or others might think it is. I am on the side of the cyclists here and I don’t see how anyone can be on the side of the driver, if that is the law.

Well, he could have if he had slowed down after noticing the riders ahead of him instead of being a dumb drunk like all other drivers did..

My subaru is the touring sedan. It’s as big and sporty as any Toyota or even BMW but not as expensive. I also have the larger V6 3.6 litre engine not the smaller 4 cyl.

I always ask people who diss Subaru’s... Well, have you ever driven one? I really think they’re the best Jap import out there.

He would have rear ended any vehicle going slower than he was. He was drunk which slowed his perception and reaction time.
