A suspected drunk driver has been arrested after mowing down two cyclists on a road near Dallas Fort Worth airport.

Benjamin Hylander, 31, is accused of ramming his white Subaru SUV into the back of Cynthia, 68, and Thomas Geppert, 69.

Shocking video showed the vehicle slamming into the back of Cynthia before driving over Thomas after knocking him to the ground.

The incident took place on Monday and was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by a user who confirmed the driver did not stop to aid the victims.

The video shows two cyclists riding side by side in the inside lane of the freeway.

Suddenly the Subaru emerges in the distance and is seen barreling towards them.

The vehicle continues to bomb down the road before ramming into the back of one of the cyclist, knocking them into the road.

The car then swerves and clips the back wheel of the other cyclist, sending him sprawling to the floor.

The vehicle then speeds over his limp body with first the front then back wheel, crushing the man into the ground.

As the clip ends the car is seen speeding off in the outside lane.

I think i read that in Russia. If you hurt or maim someone in an accident, you are financially responsible for their recovery lor lifetime care costs so it is ironically cheaper to make sure you kill them instead.

I moved to Texas just shy of two years ago. I rode around 3000 miles per year in California, where the law requires you to ride as close as “practicable” to the right curb. I was amazed people ride using the entire right lane. I am still not comfortable riding in the middle of a lane like that.

I love my Subaru, it’s a mountain car and I assure you I’m not a lesbian.

Here in CA they have stupid bicycle lanes painted everywhere and still the dumbasses on bikes ride on the sidewalk. They obstruct traffic and take up space reserved for pedestrians.

Bicyclists should not be on the freeway.

Bicyclists should certainly not be on the inside (fast) lane of the freeway. In fact, one should be prepared to maintain a speed of at least 80 mph in the fast lane of a DFW freeway.

And finally, I can’t think of any Freeways around DFW airport that only have two lanes each direction. 183 has 4 lanes each direction. 360 has 4. 121 after 360 splits only has 3 each way. 114 has 8 one way, 7 the other. Other side of the airport, it’s 6 and 5 lanes. LBJ is 3 and 3. Sam Rayburn and Bush are 3 and 3. 35E is 3 and 3 with a couple of pay lanes down the middle.

And most of those have frontage roads.

“Poor guy. What were those idiots doing on the road like that? I vote not guilty. That accident was not caused by alcohol, it was caused by idiots on children’s points playing on the freeway.”

It’s like putting a set of barbells on a highway and then working out. If one needs exercise, perhaps it’s not a good idea to stick yourself in front of 4,000 pound behemoths coming at you 70 MPH. But then, maybe they’ve never been inside a Planet Fitness, so they don’t know what’s there?

Freeways in Texas have wake up ridges cut into them along the fog line. Sothe sides of the road aren’t bike friendly.

This is a four lane dived highway so the drunk could have move over to the left lane to pass like everyone else.

Yeah...I saw “freeway” in the article and thought WTH? Two lanes. Driver of the pickup didn’t have any trouble getting around the cyclists.

75, 80 and 85 depending on where they are. Driving across Texas can be a chore.

the inside (fast) lane of the freeway

This story is from the Daily Mail. Brits call the lanes inside or outside opposite to what we do. No idea why, and it makes no sense the way they do it.

The writer should just have said that the cyclists were in the right lane.

“right lane of Airfield Drive near Freeport Parkway”

Divided highway. Almost no shoulder?

One report says bicyclist clubs frequent this area. Seems insane.

That makes some sense - the right lane is the inside lane in England. So probably written by someone who didn’t know we drive on the right (in both senses) side in America.

No, in England the right lane, closest to the median, is the outside lane, and the left, or slow, lane is the inside lane. Told you it makes no sense.

Thanks. Two lanes each way there where it parallels the DART rail line. Divided but not limited access. Goes to 1 lane each way, not divided, after Freeport, and dead ends at an Airport fire station. Access to warehouses (FedEx) and a few other commercial enterprises. Not a whole lot of traffic, so I can see bicycling there. The Fedex trucks probably mostly come in off of Freeport - hard to get onto it from the main road into the airport from the north. Looking at Google maps, I don’t see a shoulder.

A lot of the Dart lines have bike trails beside them, but I don’t see any along that line.
