I was in 3rd grade. We had a mock election in our class and Carter won by a large margin, about 80%-20%
I remember thinking: “what is WRONG with these people?!”

I voted for Carter in his first presidential election. I had hopes he would turn the Democratic Party around from where I saw it headed. I saw Carter as a naval graduate submariner with a southern agricultural family background. My mistake, my hopes were disappointed. He was the last Democrat I voted for.

Even I voted for Carter in 1976. He was the fresh face. Navy guy. He wore dungarees a lot! This was a big contrast to Nixon walking on the beach in his black suit and wingtips.
Peanut farmer with an affable brother with a taste for beer. I was starting to develop a taste for beer at the time.
By contrast, Jerry Ford was the stereotypical uncool Republican. He was a bit of a fuddydud. Jimmy seemed cool. He listened to Linda Ronstadt. Did Jerry Ford listen to Linda Ronstadt? I think not! Jerry Ford might have listed to the The Carpenters. .
