Outraged Utah parents say autistic son, 13, was 'drastically changed' by school survey asking if he was transgender or thought about sex too much

Angry parents almost got into a fistfight with a school official after their autistic son was given a questionnaire asking about trans identity, sex, suicide, and violence.

McCall and Jon Nelson claimed their son Hut, 13, was so badly affected by the quiz he constantly worried his friends disliked him and stopped playing football.

His mother said they had the same conversation with him hundreds of times as he was unable to move on, and it 'drastically changed his life'.

The questionnaire was given to him by administrators at Mount Logan Middle School in Logan, Utah, on February 7 as part of a psychological evaluation.

Special needs students have to be reassessed every three years to confirm their eligibility and to tailor their educational support.

The Nelsons signed a consent form for the school district to evaluate for social, behavioral, and academic factors, but claimed the weren't told about the quiz.

Some of the 112 questions included whether 'I think about sex too much', 'wish I were the opposite sex', or 'threaten to hurt people' .

Jon and McCall blasted officials at a meeting of the Logan City School District Board of Education on May 28.

They said a meeting with district superintendent Frank Schofield got so heated McCall had to stop her husband getting in a fistfight with him.

'Frank slammed his fist on the table, called my husband a dumbass, and got out of his chair to come at my husband and I had to get in between the two of them,' she said.

They never would have asked us stuff like that while at school back in the day. If they did we would have said "none of your *(&O business"

“Outraged Utah parents...”

It’s a public school. They had options, they chose the one that was ‘free’. Idiots.

It’s their tax dollars so it’s their say.

There is absolutely no reason for schools or teachers to ask this of a 13 year old kid.

“It’s their tax dollars so it’s their say.”

Not really, since it’s at gunpoint. Kind of like trying to tell a guy who robs you how to spend the money he took from you - he doesn’t have to listen.

When I was 13 sex was all I thought about. Kept having to walk down the crowded hallways with my notebook covering my package.

No good reason anyway.

You and me both, brother.

School authorities should be required to fill out a similarly intrusive and suggestive questionnaire, the findings of which should then be published:

  1. How many times a day do you think about sex?
  2. No, really, be honest: How many times a day do you think about sex?
  3. We know you're lying! Fess up! How many times a day do you think about sex?
  4. Okay, so now that we've established that you are a sex fiend, how many times a day do you "rub one out?"
  5. And so on...

Regards,

It’s not exactly a new thing, whether you were personally subjected to it or not. The questionnaire was developed between the 60s and 80s as part of a standardized assessment tool for children who may have psychological problems

What’s the point of testing every three years to remain eligible for special education?

It’s not like autism is something you outgrow.

Autism isn’t the only thing kids have. Some stuff is permanent, but others can be grown past.

We had one kid eligible for speech stuff since he was pretty far behind talking (still ignores a lot of initial consonants), but once he’s improved enough they drop him from the program.

How does a teenager decide if they’re thinking about sex “too much”?

given to him by administrators... as part of a psychological evaluation.

Am I missing something here? When are administrators given a green light to perform tests and evaluate children? Isn't that something that a Dr or someone trained in psychology should be doing?

This is where I would draw the line with these schools. Take it up in that sense and they do not have a leg to stand on.

They asked a 13-year-old boy how often he thinks about sex? Come on, seriously?
