Colorado Republican Brutally Grilled By Local News Anchor: ‘Why Is Abortion Good For Your Girlfriend? Bad For Other Women?’

Colorado congressional candidate and sitting State Rep. Richard Holtorf (R) received a tough grilling this week at the hands of local 9News anchor Kyle Clark over his apparent hypocrisy when it comes to abortion rights.

Holtorf made headlines back in January when he defended paying for his girlfriend’s abortion, despite being an adamant pro-life lawmaker and abortion critic. “Anti-abortion GOP lawmaker praises the impact of the abortion he paid for,” read the headline of a local report by Clark from the beginning of the year.

o his credit, Holtorf sat down with Clark to discuss the issue.

“If abortion was the best choice for your girlfriend, why try to deny that choice to other women?” Clark asked the lawmaker running in the crowded GOP primary for Colorado’s 4th congressional district.

“So let me give you some context about that situation. Because I’m a pro-life Catholic and I believe everyone should choose life. Now, if you listen to my presentation on the House floor, did you listen to it?” Holtorf shot back.

“I did, in fact, I just quoted from it,” replied Clark as the two then spoke over each other.

Clark then clarified, “In fairness, your logic was a bit scattered in that speech. What I’m asking you about is the fact that you said that you respected your girlfriend’s right to an abortion, and then gave her money to help her through an important time ‘to live her best life.’”

As Holtorf protested Clark asked again, “But yet you’ve tried to deny that to other women. And I’m asking, why is abortion good for your girlfriend? Bad for other women? That’s my question. Simple, simple question.”

“She had an abortion. Was that her choice? Yes. Did she have that right? Yes. Was it my choice, Kyle? No,” replied Holtorf.

Clark pushed back, “Why do you seem deny the choice that you said was best for your girlfriend’s life?”

“Let me finish. Let me finish to explain,” Holtorf insisted.

“Why do you seek to deny it to other women?” Clark pressed.

“Let me, let me — I don’t, I don’t,” Holtorf replied.

“You have voted to restrict abortion access,” Clark shot back.

“And I have. And I’m a pro-life person. I think you should try to choose life every time. But there are exceptions. And there are times when you need abortion. Abortion is a medical procedure,” declared Holtorf.

“Is one of the exceptions when Richard Holtorf is the father?” Clark demanded.

“No, it isn’t that. It’s not about me. Don’t personalize it, make it about me,” Holtorf replied.

Clark hit back, “You told the story on the house floor, sir.”

“Okay? That doesn’t matter. That’s a story. Okay? That’s not that important. What’s more important is the policy,” Holtorf replied.

"So she could live her best life” would seem to be a universal exemption to abortion restrictions.

Were there no other candidates in the primary?

Of course, abortions haven't always been lethal to congressional campaigns. Scott DesJarlais makes this guy look like a saint.

It’s about the rights and welfare of third parties: the unborn.

Sadly common I have seen it in my own life.

People are pro life until they are faced with an inconvenience, a hardship, or shame.

I have also seen women carry to term under incredible pressure to kill. Should some of us are truly prolife.

Abortion is literally the 21st century equivalent of slavery, and will tear the country apart unless its banned, since it undermines all other inalienable rights.

“I respected her rights and actually gave her money to help her through her important, critical time so she could live her best life,” Holtorf said.

Usually when the media is piling on a Republican, I’ll be quick to defend. Not this time. This guy is an a-hole, and the media efforts to paint him as a hypocrite are, unfortunately, justifiable.

“Because I’m a pro-life Catholic”

No you’re not, Holtorf. You paid for your girlfriend’s abortion.

You are an accomplice in murder.

Too often, principles are compromised for convenience. His first mistake was not paying for the abortion, but the events leading up to it.

I agree. He could have told her he would take the child and raise it, while paying all the expenses of her pre birth & birth expenses.

Correct. Most slave owners kept slaves for economic reasons. Most women have abortions for economic reasons.

And in both cases, the defenders defend the practice because the victims “aren’t really people”. They are something else, something less.

as a person who has lost a child to abortion

THE MAN GETS NO SAY !

if he objected he'd get ignored.

so the whole urinalist gotcha is based on a false presupposition.

he could not stop his girlfriend , or even if she was his wife, from getting an abortion.

whether he is for or against it is a misdirection.

urinalists train in misdirection, its their forte.

Once again, the problem with the left is they keep trying to make Abortion a Federal issue. They first did it by stacking the Supreme Court with liberals and giving us Roe v Wade. Before that it was a State Right. Now, finally after a half a century of 5-6 people making a moral decision for the entire nation, the SCOTUS sent the issue back to the states. We once again have FREEDOM to decide the issue on a State basis.

Unfortunately, the Liberals believe that if they don’t get what they want they must use the Federal Government to impose that will on everyone. They cannot respect that it should be left to people to vote in State representatives to decide such issues locally. They don’t like the idea of Democracy-and you don’t get closer to ‘democracy’ in a Representative Republic than you do at local and state elections.

Simply put, Abortion existed before 1790, and that is an undisputed fact. Abortion is not listed in the Constitution, or the first 10 Amendments. Which means when our nation was formed, it was ALWAYS going to be covered under the 10th Amendment—A STATE RIGHT.

If the Democrats and the rest of the nation feel so strongly that that the State’s should be denied this right, there is a process to make that happen. It’s called a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.

I have long since grown tired of the Abortion issue, and the division that it causes among American’s. By all means Liberals, who claim to believe in ‘Democracy’ either change it at the State Legislatures or send it for the Amendment process. Don’t want to do that, then you don’t really believe in Democracy or the Republic do you. You just want what you want at the expense of everyone’s freedoms.
