Mining firm Rare Earths Norway says it has discovered Europe’s largest proven deposit of highly prized rare earth elements, potentially reflecting a watershed moment for both the Nordic country and the broader region.
One of the few deposits not owned or controlled by China, the discovery of continental Europe’s largest rare earths deposit is considered a welcome boost in Europe’s bid to break China’s rare earths dominance.
Demand for rare earths and critical minerals is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years as the clean energy transition picks up pace.
Rare Earths Norway said in a June 6 statement that a mineral resource estimate at its Fen Carbonatite Complex in the southeast of the country boasts 8.8 million metric tons of total rare earth oxides (TREOs) with a reasonable prospect for economic extraction.
Within the TREOs, which are considered vital to the global shift away from fossil fuels, the company says there is an estimated 1.5 million metric tons of magnet-related rare earths which can be used in electric vehicles and wind turbines.
The discovery eclipses a massive rare earths deposit discovered last year in neighboring Sweden.
Alf Reistad, CEO of Rare Earths Norway, told CNBC that the discovery at Fen represents a “great milestone” for the company.
“It is important to state that there is absolutely no extraction of rare earth elements in Europe today,” Reistad said via videoconference on Monday.
One of the aims of the Critical Raw Materials Act is to extract at least 10% of the EU’s annual demand for rare earths by 2030 and Rare Earths Norway says it hopes to contribute to that goal.

Many (most?) of the rare earth elements were originally discovered and identified as new elements in Scandinavian countries.
I’m old enough to remember when the tree-hugger types thought that massive
mining operations unearthing highly toxic metals was a terrible insult to Muvver Earf.
But that plant food known as CO2 is getting out of control so ... on with the blasting and digging!
At least that's what we're told here in the US. We have plenty of minerals, but we don't dare dig them up because it wouldn't be freemarkety of us since it would cost us more money.
We have to blindly follow what the Chicago Boys tell us that Adam Smith meant, and only allow products to come to market at the cheapest possible price, local industry and national security be damned.

If it is 8.8 MILLION TONS, it ain’t ‘rare’. Once again, the media is PLAYING US.
So what? I heard they have rare earth minerals in Mars. We just have to go over there to mine it.

There is certainly an increase in the pace of copper collection from existing EV chargers. Inner city entrepreneurs, and others, are ‘harvesting’ copper wherever they can. Perhaps it will become one of the first self-sustaining systems, where the stolen copper from EV chargers is sold back to the manufacturers of the charging stations. A symbiotic, self-sustaining synthesis that continuously regenerates and restores.
The fact that there will be few functional charging stations will, of course, be blamed on the evil, right wing, unwoke capitalists. Demand for an end to the internal combustion engine will increase, and the favorite mode of transportation for all despots, the bicycle, will be mandated. Anyone who cannot physically operate a bicycle will be forced to use the Uber bicycle, where young people with good knees will be available. If you cannot afford the Uber bicycle service, you will have to walk, or just remain at home, which is the ultimate goal of the Ruling Class.
