Rodgers & Hammerstein's® cinematic treasure, “The Sound of Music” is the winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young Austrian woman who leaves the convent to become a governess for Captain von Trapp’s (Christopher Plummer) seven unruly children. I don't want to brag, but... OK, I do want to brag.... While I never saw Sound of Music live onstage, I saw Julie Andrews onstage, in the pre-Broadway run of Camelot at the National Theatre in Washington, DC, when she was 25 years old. Her voice was crystal clear, with an indescribable, meltingly liquid tone, accompanied by her precise diction and joyful, sweet, loving persona that reached all the unhardened hearts in the audience all the way up to the second balcony.

And speaking of the second balcony, I could see Sir Lancelot's astoundingly blue eyes even from that distance — they belonged to the equally astounding baritone Robert Goulet. The production starred Richard Burton's gravely Welsh voice and superb acting as King Arthur.

This was in 1960; I was a very young teenager. Even so, I recognized while sitting there transfixed that I would rarely, if ever, see such a magnificent ensemble performing together in my lifetime, and it has been largely true.

Julie Andrews and Richard Burton (L); Robert Goulet (R)

I’m jealous! Love “Camelot”, Julie Andrews, and Robert Goulet! Richard Button, although not a professional singer, was perfect.

“If I Could Gaze At You Again” - so beautiful.

Heart-rending. Truly.

We had a throw-away saying in middle school back then — "I thought I'd die!" as in, "Jimmy asked me to the sock hop and I thought I'd die!!!" Later on, I would hear my Italian neighbors say, "See Napoli and die." — in other words, your life experience is now at a level that can't be topped.

I tell you, I've only felt that way a handful of times. The above-described production of Camelot, hiking to a peak on the Appalachian Trail, and bringing my firstborn home to his own nursery room.

I feel very blessed to have lived in an area of the country where so many fine arts are available. It’s been a strange trip, having been surrounded by and working in the arts while being a conservative!

I understand what you mean, even though it’s been 50 years since I’ve been immersed in that culture. It wasn’t as bad then, but it’s crazy now.

That is awesome! What a great memory. I saw Robert Goulet in a production of Camelot in Houston in the late 80’s- this time, he was playing King Arthur!
