When did “BCE” become t a thing? I’ve seen it cropping up for a few years now.

BCE = Before CHRISTIAN Era

CE = CHRISTIAN Era

It became a relatively common thing in academia in the late 1980s. I remember being told by my dissertation mentor that I had to stop using B.C./A.D. and use CE/BCE because that was the thing in common use in academia.
