Historically speaking, many of the ‘cowboys’ of the Old West were freed slaves from The South that drifted west after the war...

And Mexican vaqueros, as my grandfather was. Many cowboy terms like "lariat," "bronco," and "chaps" (from "chapparal") are of Spanish and Mexican origin.
