Ashton Kutcher blasted for saying AI could be used in Hollywood
NY Post ^ | 6/07/24 | Johnny Oleksinski

Some social media users are questioning AI — Ashton’s intelligence.

“That ’70s Show” actor Ashton Kutcher got a walloping on X, the platform formally known as Twitter, after he appeared to endorse artificial intelligence as an innovative — and cheaper — tool for moviemaking.

During a chat with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt in Los Angeles, Kutcher sang the praises of Sora, OpenAI’s generative video tool, Variety reported.

“I have a beta version of it and it’s pretty amazing,” Kutcher, 46, said.

“You can generate any footage that you want. You can create good 10-, 15-second videos that look very real. It still makes mistakes. It still doesn’t quite understand physics.

**SNIP**

But the actor really put his foot in his mouth with a later comment.

“Why would you go out and shoot an establishing shot of a house in a television show when you could just create the establishing shot for $100?” he asked.

“To go out and shoot it would cost you thousands of dollars,” Kutcher said. “Action scenes of me jumping off of this building, you don’t have to have a stunt person go do it, you could just go do it [with AI].”

Users on X were infuriated by the remarks.

**SNIP**

“Imagine being Ashton Kutcher stepping onto a film set now, after coming out and advocating for all those crew people to lose their jobs and f–---- starve. Gutsy choice, bud,” added @jfiliatrault.

Lol, my post did say “gorilla “ but i meant it to say “godzilla” - I didn’t notice when I posted that it was “auto-corrected” to gorilla lol.

Anyways, yeah, king Kong better watch out in that picture on the right- he could have his eye poked out 😆

Too funny. Jobs have disappeared for centuries due to technology. Who needs delicate dopehead actors and actresses when you can just create whoever and whatever you want with the computer? No screaming fights, no drug O.D.s, etc.

And the Oscar goes to A.I.

Those are well done, but one can tell they are computer generated images...but to be fair...with the high resolution cameras it is easy to see the skin “defects” and makeup lines on today’s actors. It is easy to see how hard they are trying to act because the body and facial movements are so well documented. And the sets and backgrounds seem perfectly staged...no gum on the pavement, no dirty garbage cans, no loose gravel, no spaghetti sauce stain on a jacket, etc.
So one artificially non-ai scene vs computer generated still is going to be lousy if the story and content is trash.

No better way to demonstrate computer problems than generating 3 posts with one self perceived “click”..sorry ‘bout that.

Those are too cool. I’d like to see a complete AI generated scene in that style, including dialog. It would have to be off the charts hallucinatory and wacked out.

Yep- artists are getting all worked up about it too- it could seriously dent their income as folks won’t pay for their content but will turn to ai instead.

In the art world though, (oil painting, collage, watercolor, pastel etc etc etc) ai art kinda really sucks still- but there will come a day when real artists will be competing agaisnt ai “art” for sales

The idea of ai for movies was generated at least 20 years ago. The “actors” would be called “synthespians”. Now, it is almost reality. It’s the idea that counts. Comic books have been read for decades without need for film , digital media, actors...

I wonder what kinds of movies SkyNet enjoys watching?

It’s not that what he said isn’t correct, it’s that Hollywood doesn’t want anyone to know this technology exists, as it could break their monopoly on content creation.

I mean, I understand why they’re complaining, but the optics are still bad.

Actors like getting paid. Set designers like getting paid. Directors like getting paid. They all like to get paid.

And the producers and studio investors like higher profits and less narcissistic BS to deal with. Unemployed "stars" can always go back to dinner theater.

It’s not going to be long. Why bother with all the expense dealing with real people, real sets, camera crews, etc. etc.?

At best, maybe you capture the likeness of an actor in 3D using photogrammetry and that’s all you need from them.

Ultimately, fake actors can just be conjured up for whatever roles are needed; fat, thin, tall, short, etc.

They’re shooting the messenger. Do they think he just provided a genius idea that nobody had thought of?

lol...of course this is where things are headed and it’s nothing new, just next level.

But, if AI can eliminate the monsters who call themselves writers, this is good.
