I'm a little unclear on why NASA isn't interested in farside exploration, and isn't interested in putting rovers on the moon to explore (on both sides). I guess they figure (a) we know everything interesting about lunar geology from Apollo; and (b) no possibility that life ever existed on the moon (unlike Mars).

Putting a rover on the moon is (mostly) far easier than putting one on Mars. The main tech challenge would be having enough battery power to keep things from freezing during the 2 week lunar night. (Or you could go nuclear and make that a moot issue.)
