I haven’t read the Robert Graves novel yet - looking forward to it, as I loved the Claudius novels. Me too. Graves was a terrific writer. Count Belisarius is a really good book, but my major complaint about it was that Graves set the very British tone of throughout the novel of unfriendliness toward the Christianity of the 6th century Roman Empire. Also, he (and many novelists writing about the period) rely too heavily on the Secret History which is titillating but rather unsophisticated.
