An amendment to Albuquerque’s immigrant-friendly ordinance had city councilors debating long into Monday night’s meeting.
Councilors voted 5-4 against it. Councilors Joaquín Baca, Tammy Fiebelkorn, Klarissa Peña, Nichole Rogers, and Louie Sanchez voted no.
For some, the amendment — which would allow local law enforcement to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers if someone is charged with drug or human trafficking or a violent felony — was a way to improve public safety.
For others, it was a measure that could make it difficult for immigrants to report crimes and potentially affect due process. Approximately 50 people came to the meeting to speak about the amendment.
“If we’re able to stop one, or two, or three people, that’s enough,” said Councilor Renée Grout, a sponsor of the bill.
In response to councilor questions, APD Deputy Chief Josh Brown said police would require additional staffing to comply with the amendment.
The immigrant-friendly ordinance was first passed in 2000.
The amendment was discussed ahead of the meeting at a vigil held by a group of dozens of activists outside of City Hall. Some speakers — including Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives Javier Martínez and Archbishop John C. Wester — commuted from Santa Fe to join the group protesting the amendment.

Once again a "blue" city chooses to protect illegals who are violent, drug dealers, or human traffickers, and crime against citizens continues to spiral out of control.

time to load the busses Abbott
Albaquerky.
These people are INSANE!!!
This is the biggest BS argument ever. If an illegal alien, relative or victim reports a crime the police are under no obligation to turn reporting person over to ICE regardless of their immigration status.
We are talking about removing the criminal aliens that even the other illegal aliens don't want around. Why, because they are the overwhelming victims of these scum.
Progressive hate the poor and minorities.
Just what I was thinking …..
This is the kind of crap you get when you put out a bowl of food for a stray cat. next week you got 3 stray cats. In 2 months you have 12 and they are partying on your back steps all night and your rose bushes are full of cat poop and your trash cans smell to high heaven of cat piss..
you should have taken a stick to the first stray and let him know he wasnt welcome at your house in the first place.
“elections have consequences and then everyone suffers the consequences” meets “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over then expecting a different result”. couldn’t happen to a more deserving community, except all of the other blue voter communists...oops, I Meant blue Communities. Freudian slip.
Texas vs NM....
red vs blue
conservative vs liberal
MLG is a nut ball.
Abbot would have no jurisdiction.
I'm not following your logic. What other crimes are you assuming the illegal alien victims are libel for other than immigration violations?
Jailing every illegal alien in the country is quite laughable, the jails and immigration detention centers are full now what are you going to do with 20 million that would need housing?
If Trump is reelected and both ICE and the Border Patrol are unleashed to cleanup the immigration mess it would take them 10 years just to clear out all the aliens currently in federal, state and local custody.
Jose and Maria strawberry pickers in California who are the victims of crime have nothing to fear from immigration enforcement. They are such a low priority no one would even bother determining their immigration status.
Jew juan to arrest me? I tell de'm you rape children and have dope in your house.
As someone who lives adjacent to ABQ I can tell you, from personal experience, that a large percentage, maybe a majority, of illegals are committing other crimes.
They see that they are a somewhat protected class and literally get away with murder.
The guy running a business in the same building as mine just went to jail for two years for drug trafficking. What he was involved in SHOULD have gotten him 20 to life.
One customer of mine - an illegal - is constantly offering to get me a car “for less than I could pay anywhere.”
Another customer, also illegal, was telling me how they are scamming SSI. They basically came here, went to SS and filed for disability, got $1200 a month in benefits, and now run a small business off the books. They bought the Social Security number for $400. When they heard my sister recently passed away they told me where I could go to sell her number!
They all seem to have an angle, a scam, something going on that is against the law.
that crap about they would be afraid to report crimes is a bunch of Hoo-wee.
