"Quantum-inspired" laser computing is more effective than both supercomputing and quantum computing, startup claims

The computer...uses an array of 100 lasers to perform calculations...Because the LPU100 lacks electronics, it can operate efficiently at room temperature and maintain a compact size similar to a desktop computer...It is also built entirely from well-understood laser technology and commercially available components...LightSolver [the Start Up] now offers select enterprise customers the ability to use the LPU100 through its cloud platform for problems involving up to 1 million variables.

Interesting even though I don’t understand it.

Because the LPU100 lacks electronics …
Oh boy. Lasers are electromagnetic radiation. You can’t have laser emitters without “electronics” either.

Electronic-less lasers…???
What, even if it were tube powered it would still be electronics.
Who wrote this crap? Just the power supply is full of electronics.

“Electronic-less lasers…???”
We’re dealing with journalists, who’d fail the most elementary science exam.
Add to that, it’s CNN, which is at the bottom end of the media.

Re: "Electronic-less"

My understanding is that Processing is electronic-less.

Current processing is done by moving electrons around.

In quantum computers, processing is based on electron spin.

My understanding is that photon processing requires less power than a laser pen and a fraction of the space.

based on the article, the LPU100 sounds like an optical analog computer for solving specialized mathematical problems ...

That is my take, too, but it is pretty vaguely written.

Basically, it’s the smallest computer possible because you are eliminating transistor gates.

Re: "solving specialized mathematical problems"

They are focused 100% on enterprise (business) customers.

The investors obviously believe there is a market for that.
