I saw both those shows. Very enlightening. And yes, it very much played a big part in the downfall of the Soviet Union. One that few talk about.

Another big part was the advent of the B-2. I attended a classified conference on stealth technology in Orlando around 1986 or 87. The keynote speaker was a leader in the DoD. I’m ashamed I can’t remember exactly who it was - maybe Donald Rumsfeld, but I do remember what he said. This is unclassified by the way. He said the B-2 program had won its mission before it had it’s first flight. It was so effective in its ability to penetrate the USSR’s long-range over-the-horizon RADAR, it made their defensive system obsolete; a system they had spent HUGE amounts of money. It was the pinnacle of how the soviets had spent a huge percentage of their GDP for many years. They could not sustain the lopsided economic spending and the Cold War was partly won through economic warfare. The Star Wars project also played a role in that same strategy.

It was HUGE. Reagan (or whoever suggested it) basically bankrupted the Soviets. It was a brilliant strategy.
