“They rule the roost. They get to do whatever they want,” said Canavan. “We have students that will have 250, 300 write-ups in a school year, failing all the classes and disrupting the student learning from those that were there that care - and it’s a real problem.”
And therein lies the problem.
It would appear to me that the problem kids are not being kicked out. They are the agitators, disruptors, etc. They make it hard on the teachers. The make it hard on the other kids.
In order to have a safe productive school environment, the bad eggs need to be completely removed - either by expulsion or sending them to an alternative school.
It seems to me that a number of these kids are un-reachable. They can’t be reasoned with or taught to follow the rules. They are dragging down others with them. That has to stop.
You and I both know that to do so would be racist.
Ahh, the joys of “restorative justice” wherein the delinquents are allowed to remain and create a nonlearning environment for everyone else and the ball-free principals do nothing about it.
When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, we were always afraid of being sent to “Reform School.” We never heard about the place, where it was located, or what it was like there. But the fear of being sent there was enough!
I don’t know if “Reform School” was ever a real educational institution, but the fear of it worked.
