Looking at wider angle pics, it seems the I'm-going-to-rip-your-throat-out expression in the iconic pic was accomplished by playing the foot-grab game, something that pretty much only owners can get away with.

We had a Shiba Inu 20 or so years ago. Good dogs. Ours was a bit aloof. We called him a cat-dog.
