Capital One Arena was ranked as one of the top 10 most dangerous NBA arenas, according to a new study.
Located in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown, the Capital One Arena hosts Washington Wizards and Capitals games. It was ranked as the eighth most dangerous arena based on factors including fan behavior and the crime rates for the surrounding area, per a recent report by BetTennessee.com.
In 2023, violent crime in Chinatown rose by 36%. The city overall experienced its deadliest year since the late 1990s and earned a top-five spot among cities with the highest homicide rates.
Last year, the owner of the Wizards and Capitals, Ted Leonsis, was proposing to move the teams out of Washington, but his plan fell through.
Last month, the District of Columbia Council approved a $515 million deal to revamp the arena and surroundings. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser had also struck an agreement with Leonsis, which addressed his public safety concerns. To ease the owner’s worries, the district would create a public safety plan before events and dedicate 17 officers for patrol two hours before and after events.

And this is why owner Ted Leonsis wanted to build a new arena in Virginia and move the team there. But he was excoriated in the media.
Yep. A lot of the young people working in DC/Capital Hill are moving to Virginia because of the crime and do not go out to dinner or out to bars in DC either. It used to be the place to go for night life.
Alexandran’s did not want it. No space for all the cars and people it would bring. And they didn’t want the crime it would bring.
I think it’s one of the most dangerous cities in the US. That came to light when that young gal was murdered while running about a year ago.
Public safety program, yes! More money into democrat politicians pockets,a real program?
Get rid of lying, traitorous democrat politicians!
“I didn’t realize Memphis had gotten dangerous.”
They don’t call it “Mogadishu on the Mississippi” for nothing.
Haven’t been there in 10 years. Won’t go back.
Not to mention that it’s nearly impossible to get in and out of DC without a speeding, parking or red light ticket.
Why can't he take out a loan to pay for a new arena himself?
The Chiefs and the Royals tried to get new stadiums built in Kansas City.
Failed...
And the Chiefs just won the Super Bowl.
DC was hopping from the late '90s to late '10s.
Now it's dead. The Whites are starting to leave the city again.
It was in the 80’s as well. It’s a ghost town now.

Too much fighting on the dance floor.
I never saw that, but, ok.
I can recall crossing the Mississippi River from Arkansas and it would be pedal to the metal to get through Memphis as fast as possible.
I’m sorry to say it, but stadiums and arenas are lightning rods for car thieves/vandalizers. The chances are high the owner will be gone for several hours.
