The police opened the roof carrier.

Only other thing I can figure is that he was asleep when the owner opened the container and immediately locked him in and added the strap which he appeared to cut for the police.
Chunnel would have left him with little O2 in that thing.

I knew a guy who moved his family from the US to France. A bunch of people stowed away in the shipping container for a few weeks. Basically destroyed all of their belongings.
