There were about 11,846 U.S helicopters that served in the Vietnam War. The U.S records show 5,607 helicopter losses.

You're right on the money. 5,000+ helicopters lost in Vietnam. I was there for 13 months. Getting shot at scared me, but nothing terrified me more than riding in a helicopter.

I remember when I was in the AF as an NCO hearing about an Army program that would have resulted in being a Warrant Officer if one transferred to the Army. Problem is that it required learning how to fly a helicopter.....

A good friend’s dad died there when the rotor came off the helicopter he was riding in. No enemy action.
